Also think about the type of fuels...

GASOLINE - Burns ver rapidily... Explosive most times. Less BTU's for a gallon of fuel.

DIESEL - It take a bit for the fuel to heat to even burn. Burns slow and completely. Also diesel has more BTU's per gallon of fuel!

Gasoline backfire are from the reason of the fuel mixture being in the manifold. Where diesel only has air in the manifold.

Diesel has a highier compression ratio compared to gasoline. This is to ignite the diesel fuel.

Reason why gas doesn't is the high compress ratio on gas engine would pre-ignite the fuel well before TDC and would cause serious damage to the crank.
