This will come down to what you like and can afford. The 1st generation '90-'93, trucks aren't bad, although not many left in good condition, and not as many available mods. The 2nd gens '94-'03, are better, the 12 valve motor '94-'98, is a simple mechanical motor, with huge potential, and many inexpensive mods. The 24 valve '98.5-'06, is electronically controlled and is the easiest to mod, as long as you can afford the performance boxes. Just beware of the "53" block. Whatever you decide, the first mod should be gauges. You really need to know the egt's, boost, and on the 24 valve fuel pressure is very important. Look around in your price range and see whats available. When you find one you like tell us about it, get a carfax if possible, and we'll tell you what to look at on that year.
