General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

Wonder how much weight there would be for off roading, snow, and would it reduce any payload?

This 20 kW generator is enough to power four homes or a big job site, it's attached to the bed of a Dodge Ram 2500.

Thats a 2nd gen. in the picture. Is it the same for the 3rd gen. trucks? IT would be VERY nice to be able to run a welder off of your truck. Very nice for farmers who want to go out in the field and make repairs instead of having to buy a motor powered welder.

If max torque at one RPM (600 lbs.), towing 11K lbs., then new clutch? Don't think the stock units would handle it. Weak clutch problems solved? Or would we all have to go with (gasp) an automatic?
It's no trick at all. In a series wound DC motor, the maximum torque is achieved at zero RPM. Any rotation and the torque drops.

The definition of torque is a force that produces or tends to produce rotation or torsion also called the moment of force. No RPM is required to produce torque. Horsepower, however, does require the action of rotation or other linear motion.

Well then, steam has max torque at zero rpm. I guess electrec motors would be the same, huh?

The military version is called the COMBATT COMercially BAsed Tactical Truck. It's more than a hybrid electric....some cool suspension mods. It was a competition that started out with all of the "Big 3" competing. GM was weeded out early on. It was Dodge vs. Ford, but looks like the Army will be buying both.

The military plans to lease them from DC for 3-4 years which means DC will be reselling in '07 or so. I'm sure that fire departments and forestry departments will be buying them up then.

I did a Google search for Dodge COMBATT:

The more moving parts you have........ The more troubles you have. Dodge sells a heavy duty rearend with a power takeoff. Just buy the generator minus the motor and hook her up.

Yup! Steam max torque/Zero RPM. Not all electric motors. Some achieve a higher torque at certain RPMs. Such as a synchronous motor.
