Re:CUMMINS VS. POWERSTROKE

My turn over point was when I got my 1999 F-350 4x4 crew cab dually to the 400hp range and realized there wasn't a whole lot left I could do to it. I was already using injectors, propane, and a chip etc... It was just too much money to carry it further and it would have gotten minimal results. Sold it and bought my Dodge... as much as I didn't like the Dodge truck it's self. Love the engine and drivetrain. Plus I like having 7 main bearings opposed to 5 in a V8, and connecting rods that are big enough to cast a whole new engine out of when it comes to 1200lb-ft of torque.

As everyone says though... the perfect combo would be a Ford Superduty with a Cummins.

I like my engine and all but not enough to buy a Ford :-X They are ugly hard shifting 6spd I have very bad dealers around here and they really don't care about you after you bought a car/truck. never had any luck with Fords. Yes I have given them a change. They just don't like me. [undecided] feelings are the same for both now.
DM01

Re:CUMMINS VS. POWERSTROKE

BOLO2 and others, don't let meaningless banter get under your skin. If you like your truck, don't let anyone change that.
Incanus, I would like to thank you in making my decision to buy a CTD even greater. I've read about the Ford PSD and don't want another problem Ford like my F150 has been.

The Quadcab has a little less leg room in the rear, no signals in the mirrors (nice, but not nec.).
And all of you here at DTR have had little to no problems. That cannot be said on the Ford site I belong to. I did test drive an 03 SO A4 2500. Even the quiet sound of that CTD got me excited. It sounds like it just wants to start pulling my trailer, hahaha.
This CTD has enough hp/tq stock that I really don't need to change it, maybe a little intake and exhaust but that's it.
I will be on the side alot watching the thread and learning about CTD, diesels in general, fuel, etc...
Thanks, Brian

Re:CUMMINS VS. POWERSTROKE

Just another angle here. I like my 02 cummins compared to the 03 F350, even engine aside. My bro. in law has one with the same major configuration as my truck (quad cab short box), and heres why I like the RAM better:

1. My truck's wheel base is a foot and a half shorter. I can park mine in parking lots where you can't park the ford, due to the turning radius. the ford does have very nice room in the cab, but that wasn't important to me. The 350 short box is longer than the RAM long box.

2. I like the stock suspension height of the 02. I can put 35" tires under mine with a 2" spacer on the front coils. I could be mistaken but I believe you have to do a complete lift on the ford to do that. My truck sits nearly as high as his does, but he's got a 4" Pro-comp lift and 35" tires.

3. The Ford has a Dana 60 axle (like the RAM) but has a corporate rear axle, which I'm sure is very capable, but you just can't beat the Dana 80 that they put on the RAM

4. By the time you put 33" tires and light bombing for extra power, the Ford is substantially more expensive to own. 33 1/2" tires (295/75) fit on the stock suspension, and $500 for an Edge EZ and you're good to go. $675 for an Edge comp and you've got plenty of smiles. For the 02 ETH, the HX 35 turbocharger's wastegate is easy to deal with and can push a bit more boost.

5. when you bomb the cummins, you are taking substantially less risk for breakdown. Its a medium duty engine used in commercial, continuous duty applications approaching 400 HP. When you bomb a ford 6.0, you are running it harder than it was designed to run.

6. My bro. in law gets only 15 mpg on the freeway running empty. I get between 18 and 19. maybe this is atypical?

7. The 1 ton (F350s are 1 tons, right?) superduty has no more towing capacity (GVWR) than the 3/4 ton RAM. both are 20,000.

Re:CUMMINS VS. POWERSTROKE

That would make more sense...but I'm not sure about that either. You're saying a quad cab short bed Superduty is longer than a quad cab long bed Ram??

At least around this area crew cabs have taken over quad cab fords are few and far between for the 03 models!

Re:CUMMINS VS. POWERSTROKE

Well...when I said quad cab I meant crew cab. They called it a quad cab on my '03...even though it's really a crew cab.

Re:CUMMINS VS. POWERSTROKE

my ford crew cab swb and the dodge quad cab lwb are within a couple of inches of each other. It is weird though. I can turn the dodge in a bit shorter space but it feels quite a bit longer.

Re:CUMMINS VS. POWERSTROKE

yea. my bro. in law's 03 F350 short box crew cab (4 door) is about the same length (but very slightly longer) than an 02 CTD 2500 long box quad cab (also 4 doors). Now my memory is fading but I think he told me his wheelbase is 156". I thought the 02 long box CTDs were 155". mine is 139". But without splitting the inches into milimeters, the fact remains that the F350 PSD short bed is about the same size of a truck as the 02 CTD long bed.

That F350 short box is one big truck. very nice if what you want is the roomy cab and the wheelbase is a don't care. But a short box that is basically the same length as the CTD long box truck? not for me -- But thats why I snapped up my 02 before they were all gone. I like the 02 short wheelbase short box truck. I didn't like that the 03 CTDs have a lower suspension, shorter box (by 1-2&quot, and a longer truck.

Re:CUMMINS VS. POWERSTROKE

Ford's can't turn. Period. My Dodge handles like a sport car(not quite but you get the pic). Very solid. Very flat. Very stable. 90* turns at 30mph are nothing.

Re:CUMMINS VS. POWERSTROKE

I noticed that too. I was pulling into this rather tight parking lot, with my bro. in law behind me in his F350. I did a rather tight 180 to get into the next row over and then pulled into a rather smallish parking spot. he made the 180 but couldn't make the turn into the parking spot itself, and had to back out and find another one.

My father in law has an F150 with IFS up front, and my 2500 CTD turns a tighter circle. one of the perils of IFS I guess.
