I think the Cummins would be killer, but it is big and heavy. Maybe the Hemi would be a better choice for a rock buggy. But then maybe not........

It's a 5.9 with 2 cyl cut off. Used in lighter equipment like backhoes and some skeed steers. Use your imagination . I think they make 99+ horse power N/A.... Correct me if i'm wrong.

Rockwells have a 6.72 gear ratio and 4bt's can be turned up pretty good. Not sure how much, but with that ratio and a torquey little 4 banger I think it would be just right.

Last edited by t-boe; 12-14-2007 at 07:56 PM. Reason: wrong gear ratio

Its not HP your after, its Tq...With Rockwells your looking at like a 7.62 ratio, plenty to crawl with. You'll also probably run something like an Atlas II, or maybe a Stak 4x4 T-Case, so you'll have plenty of gearing. Also, keep in mind, more than a few 4BT's came with P-Pumps, so they can be tweaked easily, and can make a lot of power.

Its also a lot lighter and compact, so fitting in the truck will be a lot easier, and you'll keep your center of gravity lower...Big plusses in a rock buggy.

I'd go with the Cummins. I was watching a rock crawling video and there was a guy that had a Jeep CJ with a 5.9 Cummins and it and a hood stack and it just about idled over the rocks. A 4BT would be cool too. I've seen a few around where I live and they are pretty cool

About 120-150 hp stock on a 4bt. You can get about 400hp outta one with a p-pump.

Go with a 4bt.

What would you have to worry about...oil in the chambers after a roll over...no problem, we burn oil...

Well...remember with a diesel you have keystone rings, so as long as the motor is running you won't get hardly any oil in the cylinder, unlike a gasser. There's one plus, the biggest downfall I can see is that your turbo's oil return line could fill with oil, possibly contaminating it with dirty oil, but I don't think its a big deal. No Carb to spill fuel from, also makes it a lot safer.

I can't see any reason why it would be worse than a gasser, but a few reasons it'll be better. I'm sure a few other guys will chime in.

im not worried about burning the oil . depends on how much oil passes thru the rings . i dont want it to be to the point that when i turn the motor over that is has so much oil in the cyl that it compresses and cause damage

well im pretty set to go with a 4 bt cummins found a few on ebay .

any one have any leads for a 4 bt ?
