Cummins developing a 4 banger for Nissan
#16
I'm just glad someone is finally serious about sticking a I4 in a half ton (a real diesel engine) instead of the V6 diesel that others have considered.

Never know, could happen.... I've heard Toyota may merger with Nissan soon

I saw a bunch of engineers over lunch today joyriding in a Nissan Truck. At first I thought it was one guy's privately owned truck and they were coming back from lunch.
Then I got closer and heard it. There's NO WAY that is a production Nissan! That unmistakable clatter of 4-cyl diesel power.
The 2.8L and 3.8L engines are actually "reimport' engines. Cummins designed them for markets outside the US specifically because the Big 3 kept denying that there's a market for such an engine.
Nissan apparently wanted to get these engines into their trucks overseas. Then they asked the obvious question about why not bring them to the NAFTA market?
I have access to a couple of these little engines at work. The turbo on the 2.8L is TINY-- very cute. The compressor inlet is about diameter of a small can of Red Bull!
These would be awesome re-power candidates for jeeps and such.
They are MUCH smaller and MUCH ligher than a 4BT. Way better mpg, too (HPCR).
If Nissan does bring these trucks to market, then I'll have an almost irresistible urge to get one. I don't need a 2500 to drive 6 miles a day back and forth to work.
Rumor also has it that Nissan is looking at breathing life into the 5.0L light duty V8 that was developed (I think) with Chrysler in mind but presently had no customer. That's a sweet engine package that's ready for prime time, but it's like the undiscovered baseball legend that rides the bench, waiting for his turn to go into the big game and show his stuff.
It's sad, really. Sad that such great engines aren't brought to market. Sadder still that the American auto industry is so incredibly out of touch.

Yep, I agree. Rob, you're relatively new here, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. But we do not do that stuff here. I believe you'll find the exact wording within the user agreement you read when you signed up.

It's in the user agreement that I can't say someones user name does not impress me? Are you kidding? If someone had a user name like pornfan, upyours, eatmyshorts, etc., would you say the same thing? Oh well, blame it on my inexperience and being "relatively new".

Ridiculous comparison,
I have read some of your posts, and I will say that I think you have a condescending and belligerent tone at times. Your comment about a user name affirms it.

Hopefully Nissan will straighten out the Titan prior to stuffing a diesel in it. They are absolute junks, 2 friends of mine had them, Nissan says its a full size truck and can tow 10k. yeah right. My buddy was towing a 7200# camper with his Titan when the exhaust flange behind the muffler for the tail pipe rotted off directing the hot exhaust directly onto the wiring harness. It rapidly melted it all together causing catastrophic engine failure as well as systemic electrical problems. Nissan wanted nothing to do with helping him on the repairs even though it was really poor engineering. They even went as far as to acknowledge the problem, he did report it to the NTSB.

So.... why don't we have one? Stupid company execs? Poor engineers? Sleepy dealers? I mean, almost every other country I'v ever visited had them, why don't we? I found them is some of the worst dirt holes in Africa.
Tree Huggers, that's why.
Don't blame it on the CEO of Dodge or Ford. Blame it on Suzy Q home maker who's an ardent supporter of the Sierra Club. She drives he Subaru Forester to the club meetings, and donates big lumps of cash to assuage her conscience and satisfy her ignorant need to prevent global warming and save the planet. For the children.
But, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Many years ago Chrysler experimented with a small diesel and 4 servo motors in an Intrepid. Not sure what happened to it. Small diesel charging the four corners of the car as well as added power when needed was what it was supposed to do.
I thought that might have made it to the mainstream.

Diesel electric is the most efficient system yet. These guys messing with batteries are wasting their time. Diesel electric can get up to 100 MPG in a van loaded with bricks. I saw it, I drove it, I felt it. . . Awsome.
Even the prototype smoked the tires with the bricks. The first concept was developed by Eaton Corp in Milwaukie. I was on that team 20 years ago and have been following it ever since. Did away with brakes too.
There are many economic and political issues holding this concept back.
And I JUST got my hands on a Cummins 4 Cyl out of a bread truck to build one. 900 RPM! Pretty sweet
