Your on the right track Cummins with a four cylinder mid sized truck. Demand should be strong. Now if you could only pair up with Toyota to create the next gen Prius with a small displacement, three cylinder (similar to Kubota's) hybrid that would get >80mpg around town. It would be an expensive car but justifiable because of the great mileage.

Totally agree. We know there are reliable three cyl. diesel engines in production. We also know the technology is there to clean them up. What other reason could there be besides cost? This setup could achieve 80mpg/city. If there is any silver lining to high fuel prices, it is that a diesel hybrid is not only justified, but makes sense.

Many years ago Chrysler experimented with a small diesel and 4 servo motors in an Intrepid. Not sure what happened to it. Small diesel charging the four corners of the car as well as added power when needed was what it was supposed to do.
I thought that might have made it to the mainstream.

I lived in the philippines for six years and had a truck no bigger then a four door s10 with a isuzu 4 banger. In fact that was their "full-size" truck over there, nissan, toyota, mitsubishi, and isuzu all had trucks with I4's or I6 diesels in em. Id love to get one here.

South of the border you can get a Ranger with a 2.8L diesel. Volvo built a diesel electric hybrid V70 wagon. If I remember correctly the diesel powered the front wheels and a generator while the rear wheels had electric motors. They claimed 120mpg.

Toyota has eight manufacturing facilities in the US. Is that not supporting the US? The reason I used Toyota for my example was because the Prius is the most fuel efficient mass produced car in the US. It has a fuel efficiency rating of 51city/48hwy. My point being that if a four cyl. gasoline powered hybrid can do that, what can a three cyl. diesel powered hybrid do?
Does this mean you would not buy a Dodge Ram because it was manufactured in Mexico? Does it mean you would also not buy the Nissan Mule with a Cummins power plant even though it will probably be assembled in the US? The list goes on and on.
