Cummins 4BT into my Scout?

For some reason I can't shake the idea of transplanting a 4BT (pretty much the same as our engines, just 4 cyls) into my Scout.

I've read that it can be done. Anyone have any thoughts on this wacko idea? Anyone have any idea what kind of mileage I might expect from a 4BT?

Thanks,
Christian

Check out youtube. If you search "cummins scout" there are 2 videos of a guy who put one in his '69 scout.

That sounds like a neat idea. You will probably need to add some spring to the front axle.

Seems like I recall McInfantry reporting close to 30MPG from his 4bt powered M715? at 55MPH. It dropped off above that presumably because of gearing and torque issues but still impressive. I may be wrong but that's my recollection.

It can be done, it has been done. Theres a guy floating around this site that has done it, and a nice job of it I might add. Im doing it, just dont have the time to do it. No need to add to the front end though the stock IH345 weighs just about as much as the 4bt. Do some looking around, youll find some neat stuff.

I know a few guys that have done it, one is a 1966 Scout 800 rock buggy, one in a 1977 Scout 2 and one in a 1980 Scout 2, both the scout 2's are pretty stock, both are CPL 858 4BT's, NV4500's one with 33's and one with 235's. Both are getting high 20's low/mid 30's for mileage. In a fully inclosed cab the unblanced 4BTs are pretty noisey, but who cars its a diesel. I'am still in the parts collecting stange to put my CPL 858 4BT in my 1976 Scout Terra, I sold off my GM adapter and going all dodge stuff, adapter, flywheel, starter and diesel NV4500, still unsure what t-case are t-cases i want to run in mine, Thinking toward a Klune and a NP205. Hopefully this summer i can start on it but i have been saying that for 2 years know.

My Dads got a 1980 Scout Terra thats the pickup version, with a 3.4L I6 not a B serious though. It uses the original 4 speed tranny and i know it had to have an extra leaf in the front.
