Cummin 8.3 Info Needed-Engineers Please Look

Hello Everyone,

This is my first post and although I don't own a diesel, I am an intern for as a diesel fuel injection engineer for a very well known company in the diesel world. Anyways, I am in my last term at school, and doing a project involving Hydraulic Hybrid Transit Busses for a Vehicle Design Class. I am doing the powertrain optimization and performance estimation for the project, and I have my simulation already built in Excel. However, in order to accurate, I need one more bit of information, and that is the brake specific fuel consumption for a Cummins 8.3 Engine rated at 330hp.

Now you guys may be asking "Why don't you just go through your company if you are in the diesel world". Well, turns out it's not so easy to get proprietary information even when your in the business. To my understanding, Cummins put that information on their website, but took it off recently. I was just curious if any of you diesel nuts out there may have access to this information, and may have this saved? If so or if you know anyone that could help, I would be greatly appreciative. Any BSFC info for an equivalent diesel engine would also help, since this is just for estimation purposes.

Thanks again!
M

M,

SRI, RTI and EPA report Cummins 8.3L BSFC as follows:

Low Sulfur Diesel - .398 lb/bhp-hr

Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel - .392 lb/bhp-hr

Note: these are weighted averages, for simplicity's sake.

Let me know if you have trouble converting it to metric...

These tests are 3 years old, but should suffice for your calculations.

OOPS!

Just noticed your 330 HP specification; the figures I gave you are for a 275 HP 8.3L... guess you'll have to adjust with your slide rule err - I mean, calculator!

Thank you much sir, I appreciate it alot. I shouldn't have much trouble converting it....us young'ins have some new fangled, state of the art conversion programs.

Also, it doesn't matter much whether it was for the 275 hp or 330 hp engine, it's simply for estimation...this should work just fine.

Thanks again!

Are those figures transposed for LSD and ULSD? The ULSD is suppose to get slightly less fuel mileage which should be a slightly higher BSFC.
