CTD and an '05 VW TDI - a TWO diesel family now!

I did it.. I finally stumbled across a really fine '05 VW diesel Beetle for the family... Holy COW! that little thing FLY's like a ROCKET! I told the wife, she's gonna' get a ticket in that thing without even trying!

Now I need to get edjumucated on the care and feeding (and quirks!)of those Pumpe Deuse TDI's... But MAN can that thing RUN!
I know enough about diesels to keep from getting in trouble for the short-term, and I know about http://www.tdiclub.com/ but are there any other good ones I should check out?

Love my 02 beetle tdi. You are right it will haul. And go around corners with tires a squealing. VW owns Audi, and the beetle is on a shortend A3 chassis. Freds tdi is the best, glad you found it.

vwvortex.com is a good resource...

Yes, we are really loving it! I don't want to make it a real ricer killer since it is "eventually" going to be my 16yo daughter's car. I say eventually, if I can ever get my wife to let go of it...
The PD engine is really quiet. It doesn't sound like a "diesel"(i.e, a 12v CTD).
I've heard gasoline engines that sounded like diesels as they had more of a fuel knock sound than this one.
The little turbo has a really satisfying whistle to it even right above idle.
Driving the TipTronic auto tranny takes a little getting used to... It decelerates like a manual tranny.
Thanks for the info on VWVortex.. I'll check it out too.
Now to find a source for some 505.01 oil...

Thanks for the offer Buckshot.. I'll definitely keep you in mind when I have a TDI question....
I'm only new to the new TDI VW's.. I grew up on the old 60's and 70's flat-4 type 1's and 2's and a few later gas Rabbits (and a few rabbit NA diesels).
There is only one dealer down here and from what I understand, they're OK,...now.
I still have bad memories from dealings with the previous notorious VW dealership... The predecessor was a greedy, unfeeling scumbag from HELL . In the 70's, I witnessed many a poor soul (aka-trapped service victim)having an ugly meltdown at the service counter! I was just glad I would only go there to get parts... VERY Bad scenes!

Anyway, This NB has 20k-miles on it and is immaculate. I just want to stay within the warranty so my wife or daughter won't have any trouble with a warranty conflict.

They sure are fun to drive!

I'd like to chip mine too, or put in a set of injectors. But I would HATE to blow it up!!! I wondder what you can safely do without problems??? Also, I want to get rid of the terrible EGR. It just seems to lead to problems with the VWs.

We have 3 diesels. 2 Jettas and the Cummins. Oh yea our, 4th car has a turbo also. So that makes 4 turboed vehicles. Woo-hoo I love boost and diesels. All of our cars are moddified, chipped and or injectorized.

I don't think you have to worry about blowing up a modded VW. The wifes Jetta has been chipped since new and now has 120k miles on it. I drove a stock 02 VW Golf the other day. Man that thing was slow.

Were up to 3 diesels now with the addition of the CTD. The wife drives a 05 jeep liberty sport with a 2.8 VM. I also drive a 86 golf 1.6 na with 289,xxx miles, slow as a snail but i love it, and so cheap to drive.

I went to a TDI GTG a couple of weeks ago - it was a lot of fun to see some of those chipped and injected VW's up on the dyno making good power and smoke. Much like the Dodge/Cummins get togethers, only less smoke.

With my new A5, I'm only a regular member of the 600 mile club - but I don't think I will be able to join the 700 mile club. Fantastic little car.

I hope to see TDIs come back soon with AWD models. I had an 02 golf GLS manual. My favorite car yet. It was DEFINITELY a 600+ mile car on 12 gallons - Try to do that in a Prius at 70 MPH?

We have an 04 Jetta GL automatic which is pretty decent on fuel, 40MPG around town. But super boring. Should have sprung for the manual trans and GLS. Now my wife, once she gets her hands on a car wants to keep it forever (smart woman!) so we'll have to wait a while.

For the oil, from what I have seen, there's not much in the way of a "cheap" place to buy it. I bought the oil for the 5k change at the dealer, and it actually wasn't as bad as I thought ($46.51 for filter and 5 L).

One of the places that they talk about quite often is World Impex in Cockeysville, MD. (They're about 25 mi from me, so I'm actually going to stop in and check it out soon...10k is coming up soon.) I believe the website was www.worldimpex.com.

If you catch the oil on sale, it seemed like you could save some money, and I don't know how much shipping is, so it might just cancel the savings out.

So, I figured I'd just show up with the CTD and save myself the shipping costs.

Generally, until they get a US source/manufacturer, it's pretty painful. (I think I paid $1 more for the 5 L of VW oil and filter, than I did for the 12 qt of Rotella and filter for the CTD. Go figure.)

Oh, well...the 42 mpg that she's getting and 10k interval (after this change) offset the costs quite nicely.

Now, if only I could talk the wife into letting me buy a good still for the bio.......

BTW...I had the same problem getting used to the deceleration. A little different, plus I only drive it once or twice a month, if we're going somewhere the dually won't fit.

Enjoy the two diesels...I really loved it when we bought them both, diesel was $0.20/gal cheaper than gas. Now that it is $0.40 more, I still love it.
