Crossing over to the dark side....maybe
Friend of mines got a dmax with the alli and everytime I drice it just makes me want one more and more. So...I'm goin to look at an 01 3500 4x4 this week. Reasonable price just under 100k miles. I love my cummins but a vp failure is always in the back of my mind. Its been a good truck but I'd love to have an allison. Anybody know of any commen problems with the 01 dmax's other that injector problems? Thanks for the help guys

Can't help you on the dmax question, sorry. Since you've already got your tranny sorted out, I personally would p-pump that sum-pup and have one heck of a rig! Good luck with any direction you go

Well don't get me wrong. The truck runs good. Just got done pullin about 16k to the nc coast and the truck never skipped a beat. I was just thinkin since there's only 91k on it nows a good a'time as any to trade. I just wanna get rid of this vp I never kno when I'm gonna jump in it and it throw me the dreaded vp code

Thanks for the replies guys. And yea I kno about the injector issues but heck I feel like I'm standing by on a vp replacement as it is. I love this truck...other than that danged ole vp. Maybe I should look into a p-pump swap.:-) anybody wanna sponsor said swap???? Lol

whats the difference between waiting for the vp to go out and waiting for the injectors to go out on the Dmax?? I vote PPump conversion If you replace the VP then you wont have any worries, If you replace the injectors you got to worry about them going out again 8 more times?

We have an '04 D-Max at work with almost 200k on it.
99% of the miles are towing tractors and farm supplies in excess of 15k lbs.
Not one engine problem the entire time.
Even with a heavy load it's set the cruise control and go up and down though the Rockies at the speed limit.
Only problems were just common wear items but no doubt some of the wear items will soon get very expensive.
I like driving the D-Max but prefer owning my 12 valves just because of their simplicity and longevity.

Kind of sounds like your mind is already made up and you are using the VP as your excuse to dump the truck.
Why not just have a spare VP or even replace it now and keep the old as a spare and keep what sounds like a very reliable low miles truck???

There have been a few very small problems with wiring harnesses getting fractured going to the FICM and the TCM . Other than that the LB7 is a really reliable engine (injectors of course). Lots of basic upgrades can get you in the 400 hp range without much tranny work.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I went and drove the dmax today...and other than the tranny and the interior..I wasn't that impressed. I just couldn't feel the low end like I'm used to with my 01. So I think I'm gonna pass on this one. Ill keep lookin. But I still might keep my dodge. Well just have to see. But man that interior was nice

Well that's the whole reason I went to look at it. I want a crewcab. My fiance is finishing college in the spring and were gonna be starting a family shortly after and I kno I'm gonna need the room. And around here a crew cab dmax is 5-6k cheaper than a dodge of the same year.

Its hard to get the low end torque of the I6. They all report high torque with the chips etc for the Dmax, but I have driven one with a mild 120hp VA box on an LB7. It goes, but needs revs to start pulling. You would have to give something to get something.
