Lets say that the big three came out with 1/2 ton trucks with V6 (Ford and Chev) and I5 (Dodge) diesel engines. Say 240 HP, 400 ftlbs. Curb weight 5000-5500 pounds, GCWR 10,000-12,000 pounds.

Would you like a truck like that more than, less than or the same as a 3/4 or 1 ton truck like you have now ? (Leave brand out of this for now. If you like Fords, pretend it is a Ford...)

What sort of mileage do you think they'd get ?

 

1/2 ton..... mini truck....... station wagon....whats the diff, cant haul a camper and tow 6-10K? no Bueno. with the right gears ,30 mpg would be nice though.

 

I heard the D-max V-6 is coming this year. I've also heard the F*rd/Dodge rumors.

 

I'd ****** up a I-5 diesel in a ford or a dodge in a heartbeat as long as it was a cummins Wouldn't have a v6 I would think it capable of at least 25 mpg

 

both my dad and I will be there when a little diesel once again makes it's way to a smaller pickup...i don't even mind going a little smaller than what u guys might have in mind...somethingn like a 3liter or 3.5 is more than adequate...id like to see 30mpg...heck gimme a 1/4 ton truck...like a dakota or the new tacoma and put a 2.5 diesel and i'll be running to get one

 

I'd take a smaller diesel in a van to haul the family around. Not in a lesser pick up though.

 

I'd take a 1/2 ton diesel for sure. I tow all the time but am not looking to win races. I want fuel economy. Nice to see at least 30-35 mpg with it.

 

I have to have a pickup for work, for me the ideal size would be something the size of a Tacoma with a nice diesel that gets at least 30 mpg. As soon as something becomes available I will be all over it.

I have a '72 Chevy C-10 2wd with a 4 cyl, 200 cid, turbo, intercooled diesel in it. I love to drive it. And the looks I get from people are priceless. The engine came out of a Allis Chalmers 6080 tractor and has a Ford 4 spd granny trans behind it. It gets about 24 to 25 around town. Don't drive it much on the highway, it's top speed is only 78 mph. It has a 3" stack on it and smokes like a freight train. It pulls good but does not have the suspension to hold up much weight.

well i currently drive a 1/2 ton diesel.in the form of a 92 gmc ext cab 6.5 5spd.i don't need a 3/4 or 1 ton.i just need the capability to haul a 300 lb machine maybe once or twice every 2 weeks,otherwise i drive my tdi jetta.if i could get something say dakota size with a 4 or 5 cyl diesel,that would fit me perfect,but i'd really have to see some milage increase,i'm currently running 25-27 depending on how i drive,i'd have to see 35 or better to make it worth my time,if i could find a nice vw caddy i'd jump on it instantly,hard to beat 50 mpg. what gets me is it's like these manu's don't want us to get milage,look at the jeep liberty.i was expecting that thing to push 40 mpg,man 25-28,might as well have a gasser,

 

I would love a 1/2 ton diesel for commuting to work. The power ouput you mention is what my 95 makes! 25-30 should be easily obtainable in a full size truck that wieghs a full thousand pounds less. I have been thinking of doing the 4BT swap into an older truck one of these days just for a cummotor.

 

i'd like to see something tacoma sized that could pull 30 MPG. then I could just use the big one for towing not as my DD!

 

In a second. I do long commutes and unloaded trips. I bought the engine. The 3/4 ton chassis just came along with it.

 

I could even go for a light duty in a diesel. The Toyota HiLux/Minitrucks they sold with diesels over in Europe and basically everywhere else but here are awesome. Great mileage, decent amount of power, and you just can't kill 'em. Give me one with a 5 speed, 4wd, and an extended cab just for short trips (or long commutes), light duty hauling, and 4 wheeling of course. Even if you don't need the hauling power/capacity its nice to have a short box at your disposal if you're on your way home from work and lets say someone tossed something out on the curb that's just too good to pass up. Yep, I'm a certified garbage picker.

 

I wouldnt want a 1/2 ton or smaller diesel myself. Just wouldnt suit me. I like driving a big truck, it gets great mileage, and pulls whatever i hook to it. Its just a great all around truck, and gets better mileage than most compact trucks(gas). Im sure the mileage would be nice, but i just wouldnt want that small of a truck, and plus i pull with mine, so I couldnt use one for that.
