In June my commute went from about 20 miles round trip to 80 miles round trip. In driving my 06' daily, I estimated it would cost me about $100 - $120 every 5 - 6 days in diesel to fill the truck up. In a month, that was about $600 plus in fuel. Instead of selling the truck, I went out and bought a 2011 VW Golf TDI and I spend about $40 a week in fuel and get anywhere from 40 - 45 mpg on my weekly tank of fuel. The fuel I would be spending in my truck covers the payment, insurance, and fuel in the Golf.

In short, if you like the truck, keep it and buy something smaller and more efficient.

I bought a motorcycle for my daily commuter. I still drive the truck once a week or so, tho. What I save in fuel pays for the bike payment, fuel, insurance and a 12 pack of beer a pay period.

Nope, they went straight from the 48RE ( 4 speed ) to the 68RFE ( 6 speed ) in 2007-1/2 ( switch to the 6.7 )

On edit, whoops, reply to question about 5 speed auto.

Take a look at Ford's Ecotek engine; 3.7l twin turbo direct injection, 400ft/lbs. It's new but looks pretty promising.

I'll believe that when I see it. They've been talking about it for years.
