City Fuel Mileage Sucks!

City Fuel Mileage Sucks!
I get 19+ mpg on the freeway and only get 12.5 to 13 mpg in town? I've got an auto tranny, 4.10 gears and 265/75/16 tires. Is this normal? I am light on the throttle in town.

It takes alot of power/fuel to get that much weight moving.
Being a 4X4 dosen't help either.
Mine isn't much better.

"City Fuel Mileage Sucks!" No kidding.
Probably a reflection of your in-town driving habits for that kind of mpg spread. I've never seen 12-13 unless there's 9k hanging out back.
If I saw 12-13 in town, mine would be parked more often than not.
My typical fill up yields 17.1 over the tank. Highway is over 18.5. Yep, those 4.10s kill mileage.

I have a 4x4 with 3.73 and auto. If I'm totally lollygagging I get about 15-16. If I step on it enough to accellerate with the rest of traffic, I get 13-14. Agreed, the fuel mileage sucks. I think the highway mileage sucks too. I get about 15.5 - 16 on the highway doing about 75-80. The speed limits here are 70, so nobody goes below that. I'm sure if I were in a 55-65 zone the mpg's would be better. This is sure a shot in the wallet compared to my TDI!

If you want to make yourself feel better, compare your truck to what it should be compared to...other 3/4 ton 4X4 pickups. I have several friends at work that will drive nothing but Ford Powerstrokes and every time we compare mileage, I come out on top. That is in town, highway, loaded, or empty. If you want a bigger smile, compare yourself to the same truck with a gas engine, especially the V10. We have a bunch of 1 Ton V10's at work and granted, they are work trucks, but over a year they average 6 miles per gallon! If you are going to compare yourself to a Honda Civic, you are going to be unhappy. If you are looking for the best mileage in a full size 3/4 ton, you already own it.

I seem to be stuck at a solid 15 no matter how I drive. Highway/city, fast/slow, hot rod/not. The truck is just starting to break in now. I've only got 50K on her. LOL. Best I have gotten is 23.

Get an old truck, those computer controlled ones suck. Mine gets 17 playing around in traffic, 19 at 70 on the highway. I think guys claiming over 20 mpg on the highway are driving like my dead grandmother, not like a red-blooded American male. Compared to my old gasser ('85 D250, 318 2 barrel, auto) I am making out like a bandit! Nine wallet flattening miles per gallon in town or at 70 on the highway (tach just over 3000 RPM).

These Cummins love to climb the hills. Around town I'm getting 18.5 mpg. Yup even with a 4.10 axle, and that notorious Calif. #2 Diesel. Of course the 5 speed stick tranny helps. On freeway at 70-75 mph I get 21 mpg.

Re:City Fuel Mileage Sucks!
I've had my truck for about 13 months. The worst I've gotten with mine is 16mpg. That's around the house and city driving in Houston,TX.The best was 19.5mpg, Interstate with the cruise set at 65-70mph. You also need to add 6% to those figures because that's about how much my speedo is off due to oversize tire's (Mud Terrain Type Tread). I had a 1993 Z-71 before this that got 16mpg best ever, and averaged about 12mpg around the house, I had to rebuild the motor, trans, and replace the rearend because thay wouldn't stand up to the workload :. Sure I would love to get 20-23mpg, but as amartinson said, compare apples to apples. Yes a Jetta TDI gets better mileage but will it do the job that your truck can do? I love my truck and it just gets better and better every day as it performs flawlessly at whatever task I ask it to do. A friend from down south was riding in my truck Monday and asked me why I bought a Dodge and I told him that it had the best engine, transmission and axles and I liked the body style, other than that I couldn't think of a good reason. ;D

Re:City Fuel Mileage Sucks!
I do a lot of highway driving ( just check my stats below), and I can get 20-22 unloaded. But when I visit my children in the Philadelphia area, the stop and go driving down there will pull the mileage down into the low teens very quickly. I think your mileage for the type of driving you're doing is right in the average neighborhood. Remember, you could be getting 10 with the 5.7l gasser :

True, true. I had a '98 Ram 1/2 ton with a 318 and was getting 11 city and 15 highway. Guess I'm getting pretty good mileage thinking back. I was just wondering why a lot of you are getting better than I am. Thanks to all for your comments.
