Choice of oil
#35
Rolella T and change oil once a year which is about 8000 or less. Will switch to Mobil 1 full syn. next time since I can get it cheaper. But then I also change the Frantz oil filter every 1000 to 1500 miles. And my oil never has that black color you get at about 500 miles. Will still change The oil once a year when using Mobil 1 since it is cheaper than cost of testing lab.

Not on the list; Schaeffer's Supreme 7000 synthetic blend 15W-40 is what I'm currently using. It contains 20-25% group IV PAO basestock, the rest group II+ dino. Calcium based detergents for low ash content. Also contains Moly and Antimony. Cost is less than $12 a gallon and performs like a full synthetic.
For winter I plan on using their Supreme 9000 5W-40 oil. Same PAO content, with the rest being group III base oil.

I would sure like to see some real world testing from Amsoil/Schaeffer and the rest of the high profile synthetics on the market,I have been real curious about the Schaeffer oils..

Very interesting discussion on synthetics. This fellow jestal has been an engine designer for 30 years and appears to know his stuff.

Rotella is hard to beat for price performance. Many big rig drivers run it, gives good service life.
I do not think syntehetics are good before break in. They do not seem to offer advantages in increased service life; all they do is provide better heat/cold protection, which is not an issue for most of us. I think buying Syn for motors is urinating $$$.
Further, I have heard some Aircraft makers will vour warranty if you use syn. It does well for gears/differentials, but doesnt do as well for valves/seats, where it does not work as well as dino for pounding.
Consumer report did a report on OILS not long ago & Rotella looked good. It meets evryones spec, priced right, has a good track record. What's not to like?

I used Valvoline Premium Blue when I could find it. Rotella otherwise. Premium Blue is Cummins' recipe contracted and brewed by Valvoline. Used to be brewed by Castrol. It's what comes in our motors from the factory. When I'm back in a Cummins powered Ram, I'll look for PB again...
Bill, Sorry bout snaggin' your link and posting it in the other forum. I got it from a thread on the "Open Roads Forum". Didn't realize you already linked it here. He seems like a very intelligent feller.

I use Delo 400. I change between 3k and 5K. If I think it looks too dark after 3k, I change it the next Saturday. I just don't like black oil. Obviously, sysnthetic wouldn't do me much good; it would get too expensive at 3K. Delo 400 is always availiable at Wal Mart. Sometimes I need to go with quarts instead of gallons because the gallons are sold out. I tried Rottella once when they were out of Delo 400 gallons, but I must like the pretty blue bottle with the shinny piston.
I use Redline in the rear diff and manual tranny.
I didn't notice the smell of Rotella. Must have been masked buy the used gear oil I had stashed away in the corner of the garage.
