cetane and other diesel fuel qualities in western Canada
after all discussions about the quality of our diesel fuels i decided to call all the bulk dealers i buy my fuel from and find out the quailty and cetane they sell, they were COOP, ESSO, UFA, AND HUSKY
i did find out that ufa just buys their fuel from esso, and their quality is the same as essos, esso will be faxing me the info, but did say their fuel has a low baseline of 40cetane(standard#2) that it can be, will post more latter on this
coop suprised me a bit on the info they delevered by fax, they make their own product in regina, they only make an ep3000 diesel fuel and it is bassically a preium fuel, it has a summer flash point of 71 and winter of 62, viscosity of 3.2 summer and 2.3 winter, cetane of 46.5 summer and 43.5 winter, api gravity of 33.5 summer and 34.2 winter, it is like bassically adding a additive to standard #2, with supperior charterastics, and cleans injectors, causing less black smoke, also found out that the ep3000 is shipped to all cardlocks in the south of sask and alberta, once north of calgary, it is supplied by an edmonton refinery, so i am not sure about their quality, and what is offered in bc, maybe juice can find out
http://www.pembinacoop.ca/PetroleumProgram.htm for a little more info, as for the price it runs about 1 cents more than esso stn #2
as for husky, i found out they buy their fuel threw an edmonton refinery, and ship to calgary where their tank farm is located, they supply two diesel fuels, a standard huskey diesel fuel(#2), and a prieum, diesel called huskey diesel max, it is an additive they add to the standard with some great qualities added, similar to the ep3000, it runs about .3 tenths a liter higher than their #2,they say their diesel max additive gives a 2 to 3 cetane #increase over base(#2) and base ussally is in the 40 to 43, their viscosity is 1.7 to 4.1 on summer and 1.3 to 3.6 on winter, api gravity is 33 for summer and 41 for winter, the diesel max additive can be bought at the bulk dealers and added at a rate of one liter to 3000l of fuel
http://www.husky-oil.com/products/default_diesel.asp
both the coop and huskey use the cummins L-10 test for their premium fuel, and lots of info on what that test involves when a search is done on it,
as from one farmer that uses in the neiborhood of 15000 gallons, i think the benifits out way extra price, and am happy i have been using coop for most of the fuel
if i left anything out, please fill me in, i now know what i will be running for dyno day

Thats good to know.. Ever since I moved to Lacombe about 1 1/2 years ago, I have been running COOP fuel. I do like it, you can tell the difference in smoke and smooth idle. I found the stuff that Fas-Gas sells to be a little rich on the smoke side for whatever reason.
So with the COOP fuel and the Lubtec performance additive it would be near 50 Cetane ...
Good Reasearch Fred, thanks...

Since I live in Regina I still cannot understand why the fuel here is more money then in Alberta.
Now diesel is the same price as unleaded. 84.9 cents a liter.
Good info on the COOP. I will have to try their fuel.

i did receive a fax today from esso, it stated the density in the winter .86, and summer .877cetane of 42, in the summer up to 45, from what i can tell it is just a standard #2 with no additives, if someone knows more fill me in

I understand some of you guys can run coloured fuel in Farm plated trucks???? Who all is doing that? What are the rules? How much do you save per litre?

As far as I know, you have to have a registered farm business with the province. After that the registration offices can issue a farm sticker and appropriate paper work to run the farm fuels.
Typically you save the $0.10 to $0.15 per liter for the road taxes not included. The fine for running it without stickers is pretty steep..
