catalytic converter question

I have a '97 CTD that is pretty much stock, 145K mostly highway miles, about half of that towing 5000 lb.

I read in another thread that by that mileage, the cat would be partially plugged. My mileage has remained fairly consistent over the years at around 20 mpg (5-speed, 4wd) in normal unloaded use.

Should I be opening the exhaust system and removing the guts from the cat? I'm planning on going to a 4" straight thru system when the stock exhaust wears out, but I would like to know if I should bother with the cat now.

All help appreciated.

The Cat was put on by the EPA regs.
Disabling it would be illegal.
