I doubt cat would endorse a bad oil. but I figured I would ask anyway.

What are the API specs on it?
CH-4, CI-4, ????
On edit: Unless you know the person really well, and they bought it, I'd have a sample (per pail of oil) tested for contaminants. Particularly if you get the oil for free, $20 per sample is darn cheap for 10G of oil!

CF/CG swervice seems pretty old....
From: http://api-ep.api.org/filelibrary/AC...l%20cf%20cg%22
CF was introduces in 1990...CG in 1995.
CH in 1998...I'd say this oil is at least from ~1998. I'm not sure what would happen if you were to use it, nor how well it would hold up in the newer diesels. Reading through the API link, it appears it's mostly a change in additives to handle emissions requirements. Perhaps it could be used in some of the older (<1998) trucks.
www.bobistheoilguy.com might be a better place to ask your question.

Back in the late 90s we got a bunch of cat front end loaders. So we started using cat brand oil to stay in the warranty req's. The stockroom buyer was having a fit due to the high cost of the cat oil. He did some checking and was told that the cat oil was for a fact Mobile 1300. So we switched to the 1300 for the cost savings. We still sent oil samples for years to the cat lab for testing and we where never questioned if we had switched oil. It's got to make you think, someone must make the oil for cat right?

A friend works for Cat on the Generator/Power division, and he said that atleast now, its in the same bottles as Mobil Delvac-which it is, same identical bottle, and he said he has even seen a few things with Mobil's name on it.
My dad has a 2005 Peterbilt, and a small sticker on the drivers frame rail under the hood says" Caterpillar recommends Delo, or its Factory filled with Delo" I cant remember, but it threw me a curve ball. Who knows
