Exclamation Cat 3512A doing a little work. PICS...

That's 3512A series mounted on a hydraulic fracturing unit putting out a little horse power. It's rated at 2200hp, but I'm not sure what is was putting out right there. I did not think to check the horse power calculator at the time.

We used to run strait stacks on those but had to change to the mufflers so we could run them in the city limits. They were a sight to see with the straits on them.

It's rare we work them that hard at night so I thought I would snap a few pics ro share.

Wow, cool!

I only get to work on the stationary Natural Gas ones, so they have water jackets over all the exhaust and turbo housings and I don't get to see that heat......

I love that look! Dads got a tractor that will do that, but it takes one hell of a load and a straight pipe to see the flame. Still looks freakin wesome.

The turbos will live, its the pistons and the H/G you have to worry about

Is an impressive pic, I have never seen exhaust manifolds that thick heat up like that.

Fracing... Oil/natural gas well stimulation. It has a allison 9800 series transmission and a high pressure pump behind it and pumps fluid and sand down the well bore to fracture the formations under ground and the sand props the formations open to allow oil and gas to escape. That job they were treating at 10,500 psi at 80 barrels per min. Had about 13 other trucks out there.

Those are really good engines and will take a beating. I have seen one of them turn 2600 rpms. Max is 1950, and it has not skipped a beat since. I have also seen one run away after it dropped a valve and beat a hole in a piston and started pushing oil into the intake. That was pretty scary. It was shooting a fire ball about 15 feet out the exhaust. It melted the rain cap off it got so hot. The rig savers were shut and it kept on going.

Cats as well. Same model only run carbs and on natural gas (well internal parts are different too like aluminum pistons). On NG they (G3512LE) are only rated for about 850 hp at 1200 rpm. Diesel HP is much more, almost double.

The EGT's on the NG ones are just as high, near 1300°F per hole at WOT.

We have Coopers out at the plant, 8-GMWs (2000hp) and 6-GMVs (1350hp) used for compressing NG and product. The comps. are fueled by residue gas, which is NG that has been stripped of all its goodies
