Cat 3412DITM in Coast Guard Boat
Hey all, I just got a pic approved in my gallery. It is from the USCGC Hawser, I was staioned on. I know it is not a cummins.. but, I was pretty proud of it while on the boat, I put a lot of work into it. It was a 65 ft ice breaker used up and down the Hudson River. The engine was only rated at 500 hp, and had a 5:1 red gear turning a 60" ice prop. let me know what you think

I recognize that expansion tank. I inspected that boat once. Happiness is engineers who take pride. It's amazing how quickly a polished brass valve equates to less downtime because of thorough maintenance.

Yea that was me, I thought I had met you sir. You ran your truck up here right? The flames you saw were replaced with these, the first set I did came out with funky little ears on the black, so I redid them. The PTO belt cover is copper nickel. That was a tough one to mold.

OK, you got this ole Coastie looking at your post. I'm glad someone finally had some sense and put a real engine in one of those WYTL's. They did not have the power to get out of there own way in the Ice. Running lite, they did a good job at 15gph.
I had two of them, CGC Capstan in Alexandria, VA and CGC Catenary in Gloucester, NJ. Catenary was retired, I guess I wore her out. Like to know
were that boat went. Looks like they kept the same wheel 60x38 and came up on the reduction. That kept here at 10-11kts hooked up with alot more
bollard pull.
I had a D375 in both. The CGC Cleat had a twin turbo D379. It did better in the ICE. I burned up a Turbo trying to find a crack in the ice before I got
out of trouble one time. Delaware Bay with a ebb tide full of ice will get ya.
Especially if your trying to get to a pilot boat that was already on top of the ice.
I wrote a bunch of stuff on the need for more horsepower for the jobs we were given. At them time the only thing that was viable was a 12V71TI with 90S injectors.
Today you can put a CAT 3406 in there and think you have a genset engine for main power, its so small. (700hp) The GM Seris 60 (in line 6) at 740hp.
You could two of these engines side by side and not take up the room of the 375 that was in there.
I just posted some pictures from the winter of 78 in my gallery. I have some of that D375 with my Son standing beside it somewhere.

D379 Vs #3412
When I first got onboard it was the D379 with the Twin Disc 521 gear which is bullet proof, then with the 3412 and Twin Disc 516, what a world of hurt. The 516 was way undergeared for the prop still a 60x39, and in ice ended up replacing the rubber hub between engine and gear twice, and the reverse pack once. The 3412 and 516 gear package is great in a yacht or light duty application, but in severe ice as the upper hudson river has, the backing and ramming all day was just too much. Our Chief on board was very gentle too with the stick, that 516 just could not take the pressure. The perfect engine swap would have been a Detroit 12v149 with the 521 gear. Lower Rpm's than the 3412's 1800 all day screaming trying to keep up. Oh well it was a great tour. Still love my detroits though.
