We have to keep 8 spare I-R air starters on hand for 30 Cummins 855 engines. They cost about 3 times as much new, and about twice as much to rebuild. We converted our Cummins 4BT powered gen. sets over from air to electric starters about 5 years ago and have never looked back. The fuel savings alone paid for the conversion due to not being afraid to shut them down for fear they would not start 2 hrs. later. The problems are even worse in cold climates due moisture freezing in the soleniods, start buttons, etc. I know everyone is different, and we all like different things, but there is a reason air starters are going the way of the dinosaur.

Don't go air , go hydraulic. Then you can always pump it up by hand if needed. Those who have had to pump one up by hand before will now what I'm talking about. Oh well, To each his own.

Put one of THESE on your truck! http://www.springstarter.com/
That ought to get some doubletakes when you go out front to ropestart your Cummins!
I tell you, this brings back BAD memories of a downright EVIL Sears lawnmower with a SPRING starter! IF you ever got it going, you never shut it off because of all the "fun" of cranking that awful Lawson-Tecumseh engine.
