call me crazy
Hey guys, I need to know the teeth count on the starter without removing it off my truck. Reason being, is I have endless amounts of airstarters laying around, and I want to convert my truck to air start, I know your all like what the... I just wanna try it, be different. I have the skill, parts and the will to make more noise in the morning. So any help would be greatly appreciated before I just pull starter to count teeth.
thanks stephen

Straight piped exhaust off of an air starter close to your neighbors house at 4:30am... That'll wake 'em up!!!
Too bad old Cummins starts so quick... I guess you could keep the switch off until Mr "C" shows oil pressure, then let it get fuel .
What did they do to you anyway?

Go down to the well stocked autoparts store and ask for a new/rebuilt NipponDenso starter for your CTD... Take a look at the pinion gear and then tell the dude, "No thanks, I changed my mind.."

I have been thinking about an air start for the "survival" reason. Out in the woods, cold, I am not paying $600 for a set of batteries... they would keep the electronics going and grids, but to turn over an air start would be nice. Are you going to put a compressor on too?

If you've ever had someone hit the starter gas valve on a compressor behind you when you weren't expecting , you'll make sure you will be the next time OMG LOUD! .
They have a sort of quickly accelerating, "modulated" sound as each big piston comes up on and breaks over the compression stroke. Deeper sounding than an air impact freewheeling. VERY unique sound!
I used to see one OTR trucking line that used air starters on their trucks. They were very conspicuous on sight because they had a tall, vertically mounted starting air receiver installed right behind the cab of the tractor. When they would start, they'd make a short "WhoooOOOPPP" sound and the engine would be running.
If an engine doesn't start with an air starter spinning it, you've got something drastically wrong with fuel or fire!

Ever see Mad Max The Road Warrior? Remember when he went back to get the Mack truck? Now think real hard what it sounded like because it had an air starter. Now just crank the volume up to 11 and there ya go!

Good idea about just going to parts store and counting teeth, I know its easy to just drop and put back in, its just pretty cold right now and I have no garage where I currently live.
Loco Breath, I have experience with them and have thought it threw, I just thought it would be something different and unique to run. I grew up on the crewboats on the gulf coast before Ijoined the USCG. Your right, they can be finicky, and four going off at once is an eye opener.
I gues I am shooting for the whole monsterization idea...
