buying first diesel
ok - to make things simple.. looking to buy a dodge 2500 automatic 4x4... new to dodge and diesels.. I am a national parks type person who may pull a tailer... do not use my truck for working/etc...Was looking at 04 new ones and 04 used 2500.. can't seem to get the price down so thought about getting one with NO MORE then 50 to 70,000 miles... I like the body style of the 02's and found out you can put the new white face dials in the 02's.... the real question is are there any issues on buying a 2nd gen. diesel... ie: engine/trans/etc.... or should I just try to get a 3rd. gen type diesel... The real problem with trying to get a new "used" diesel is the price isn't mush lower then a new one....(

Lots of folks like the second gens better. But your last statement rings true, when I bought my last one I looked for 60 90 days for a low miles used one that had been well taken care of. I found plenty but bought new one for a couple grand more than what folks wanted for one with 70 to 100k miles. I live my 3rd gen and am very glad I finally just bought it.
As far as issues --- I asked the owner of a large private trans shop about autos behind diesels. He said "If you get an auto get an extended warranty!" Now I know lots of people with stock autos and high miles on them (my uncle and a friend have over 180K on thiers and all they have ever done is change the fluid, my friend's is even BOMBed and the trans is holding up).
Bottom line: It's your money, get what you want!

I tossed this around as well.. I thought abotu going used, but even used, the low mileage trucks I saw were 25-26 grand, and that was for a 2wd short bed that I didn't want. I bought my 4x4 quad cab long bed 3rd gen with all the stuff I wanted, and I got a 6 spd, instead of settling for an auto, for 33.5k out the door.

well...............
I did it ... Got a 2500 lone star edition automatic 4x4.. really could not decide on color... was looking at the blue/other... it was 4:00 pm and I decided to put my hand on the "side" on the front hood on a blue and basically said "holly sXhit" then checked black, red, gray and white... the temp on all but the white was coooking... myself and the dealer where really surprised... so in the end I got a white with taupe inside... The white was so much cooler and in the Texas heat in summer it really makes a big diff...
the only real thing is after a week around town I could not get anyone down to the out the door $$$ I have seen online... I had to put 36,000 out the door with bedliner, some oil changes and a 60,000 mile bumper to bumper coverage.. I know I could have tried to wait a month and go on and on... but I was really tired of pulling teeth...

The colors are really interesting and that is why I went with the Silver, though I did end up with the Slate interior. I have had colored vehicles and unless they are very light color they get extremely hot. Makes the A/C have to work harder too.
