box truck disadvantages?
When I moved (oops!) from Co. to Pa. I had a terrible time trying to figure out how to get all of my stuff (George Carlin) to fit. I have a 93 dually which DID pull 21000k completely STOCK without any problems, but I always wonder if I had bought something like a boxtruck just under cdl, and with a diesel, if it would have paid off. A guy could but the same year big truck cheaper than a pickup but how would I register it or buy insurance for it? What charges would I be looking at? I would most likely sell again once I got there. I'm thinking of moving west again and don't want to leave some of my stuff once again. Rich

I have but then I still have the problem of what to do with my truck. Driving across the country #$%%^ and I don't want to have to do it twice. I had to leave too much valuble stuff the first time. I would rather spend the money and sell it to recoup the cost. Rich

When my son moved he used ABF freight . www.upack.com/default.asp . They drop a 20' pup trailer and give you a couple of days to load it then drop it at your new location . You don't pay for the whole trailer , only the space you use . It cost my son less than 1/2 the cost of UHaul without figuring fuel costs . There was a topic that mentioned ABF in the Towing and Hauling section and several members had used ABF and said it's the way to go .

i just bought one of those box trucks(97 freightliner fl60,5.9 allison) .only somebody got to the box first and removed it.they then used it to pull their 5th wheel, which i plan to do.as far as ins and license, license will cost me about 10 bucks more then my 1 ton,and my ins is actually cheaper, but i have to have a commercial policy for it beings it's got a higher gvw then the 1-ton.the main reason i moved up from my 1-ton is i want to bring my bike and a few other things along and the 1-ton just wouldn't take it.i'm losing the 1-ton as a daily driver but with it's terrible milage i never drove it anymore then i had to anyway. as mentioned i don't think there is a very big market for em.i was actually looking for one with a box.i was gonna take it off and use it for a storage shed behind my house, throw some siding on it to make it look nice, maybe put a peaked roof on it.very solid and a nice locking door.some of those garden sheds they sell at home depot, menards etc i wouldn't put my compost in.if your looking for something like that a buddy of mine is an ins adjuster and he just sent me some pics of a 2000 fl70 with a 5.9 and a 6 speed that they will be totalling out,has some minor front end damage to the left fender and bumper, but by the pics it has no frame damage.it's in wisconsin,if interested send me a pm.

Darkvader; I thought about the race car idea but when I was coming east I had to tow my car also and most states east of the Miss. river do not allow double trailers. Catmandoo (Bob Seger?) What 1 ton do you have that gets bad mpg? I'm only in the planning stage right now. I have to finnish school and sell my house before I go. I'm really just toying with the idea of a box truck because they seem cheap reletive to the same year pu. I figured the ins. and registration would be alot more expensive. Rich

my 1-ton WAS a 94 gmc crew cab dually 4x4 454,and pulling my trailer i wouldn't see 6 mpg, empty i could get maybe 12.i bought it because i was looking at a 5th wheel trailer in another state and needed something NOW to tow it back.just happened to run across it for a real good price so figured what the heck.i forgot just how bad gassers are(i've driven nothing but diesels for about the last 15 years or so).
