Anybody out there know what a shining 290 is??,now that was an engine.Could do an in-frame for the cost of a pump for a cat.or buy a rebuilt pump for 300. Those were the days, when cummins was known as the poor-mans diesel.

What, you guys don't like the 8-V71 Detroit? Used to drive a '74 International dump truck with one in it. By the end of the day, your ears would ring and if anyone said anything to me, I'd have to scream "WHAT DID YOU SAY?".
On the other hand, I also got an oportunity to drive an '83 Chevy Bison (one of the last years chevy made a semi truck) that had a twin turbo 400 or 450 HP 8-V92 in it. That thing rocked! Power from off idle to screamin wide open. The boss had it out in a muddy field, and slipped the clutch trying to get it unstuck (rookie).
It'd pull 100,000Lbs gross weight (tanker full of water... I know, overweight) like it was pulling an empty trailer.
I've also driven Cat power (not all that powerful) and Cummins. I like the Cummins much better.

I also prefer the exhaust note of the cummins better. Its seems much louder and the jake on a cummins is REALLY loud! I have also heard that CATs are basicly their tractor engines with different cams and such.

My dads m11 has somethin wrong with the jake on it. Its really weak. You might as well not even use it. It cant even hold the truck back on a 6% grade while its EMPTY!!! But he plans on takin it to the shop and replacing the jake.

the cats rev up and down really slow
and if you want to hear something different, if you get a chance to play with a new isx in service mode, cut out 5 cylinders and have it idle on 1 cylinder... sounds like an old lister...
