Big Horn

Morning All!, New to the forum and need a little help. Researching a new 3500 purchase and getting strait on the ST, SLT, and Laramie options. My questions are: What constitutes a "Big Horn" designation and are the auto transmissions reliable? I will be pulling a 16000# pound 5er and a 10000# boat and need the higher weight rating that the auto delivers not mention I dont want to have to shift gears from one side of this country to the other, have done it w/some other brand and have had enough. Any and all advice would be appreciated....................................... ..boatracer85........................

I'll try my best!

ST is the work truck package I believe...bench seat, manual locks and windows.

SLT gives you bucket seats, and most power options.

Laramie steps up to the leather seats, etc.

Big Horn...I don't know for sure...

The 68RE is an excellent transmission from what I hear...

Big horn has sliding back glass, towhooks, door moldings, and a few other things. Slt trucks have power windows, locks, and mirrors and opening center fold down seat. St does not have opening center folddown seat and no power locks windows and vinyl floor.

BigHorn is an SLT package the includes some etra's at a lower cost. The Laramie is a higher package, more bells and whistles. If you come east the BigHorn Package is called something different. Can't remember what it is at this time.

The packages are called "Thunder Road", "Big Horn", and "Lone Star" depending on what region of the country you are in or the truck was ordered in. They included in 2004.5 (according to my window sticker)...........tow hooks, anti-spin diff axle, fog lamps, leather wrapped steering wheel, sliding rear window, trailer tow group, 750-amp maintenance free battery, class IV hitch receiver, 7 pin wiring harness. It was a $1025 package but then they gave (on my window sticker) a $500 "Lone Star Value Group Discount" and a $500 "Regional Discount". So I guess it cost me $25.00......for my "Lone Star" equipped truck.

I had an '08 3/4 ton and I really liked the 6-speed auto tranny. I also liked the engine brake it came with. Awesome setup IMO.

I wasn't as crazy about the engine, so I kept the truck for a year, put 12,000 miles on it, and sold it. The "check engine" light was always coming on and they could never fix it right. I didn't like working on the '08 with all the smog garbage they put on it, and I know this may sound strange, but I don't like a diesel that is so quiet. I like them to rattle a little, so I decided to keep my '05 and dump the '08.
