Better airflow ideas for 2nd Gens

The filter is all the way in the back where the airflow sucks (cold air). Has anyone ever ran a flexible tube from down by the bumper up the inner fender to the little hole by the filter. Or i was thinking if you took a dimple die and put a nice 3" or so hole in the side fender so you could draw right from the outside of the fender.

sounds like the zoodad mod for ferds. you have to cover the hole with some sort of mesh or it could suck in dirt or snow.

Have you spent any more than a cursory examination on the air flow thru the fender duct to the airbox inlet? May be somewhat surprised if you spend a little time with it, particularly from the door forward, figgerin' in hi pressure areas, and lo pressure areas, and other automotive oddities.....................

An old buddy said some of the guys in SoCal were piping their Fords A/C into the airbox for improved power and mileage. I'm skeptical this had any merit. Thoughts, sarcasm, ridiculous laughter?

Won't work - the BTU\cfm\hour rating of the ac is sufficient maybe at idle, but the increased power drain due to increased loading on the compressor would offset any hoped-for gain - plus the 360cuin air pump drawing thru the evaporator would quickly pull a 26" vacuum on the cabin, asphyxiating the occupant(s).................

anyone drill holes in their stock airbox for more airflow? had someone suggest this for more breath, wondered about air temp in engine compartment

I run a BHAF with a homemade aluminum heat shield. I'm not sure it makes much difference re: power but the surface area of the filter is much larger than the stocker and the air is available from all around it rather than thru a 5"X3" hole in the fender.

The story of guys adding an extra evaporator core are TRUE. Except the core was NOT in the air intake but in the center console. Its to keep the "pops" cold on long road trips in the days before the 12v fridges.

The cool air at the inlet of the oem airbox is pressurized thru that duct that runs from the headlite back thru the fender - look just to the right, between the vertical edge of the lite and the radiator cradle to see the front entrance - look from the passenger-door forward to see the rear entrance, taking advantage of the high-pressure area at the edge of the cowling\windshield area - plenty of cool fresh air under pressure at the airbox anytime the vehicle is moving forward - faster the vehicle travels, the higher the pressure - if you're flat-out racing\pulling, you'll need to make some mods, as that tight-radius curved rubber air duct to the compressor inlet is not conducive to sustained WOT airflow - bolt on your fix at the track, win some, lose some, bolt on the oem airbox for the air-conditioned trip back home.

Try it, you'll like it..................

I got a Scotty & it sucks through the fender & I drilled a 4" hole in the firewall so it gets its air from dual areas. But I am looking into a ram air type hood and direct it to the Scotty.

well would it work if you took some of that high temp heat tape and wrapped the turbo and exhaust to bring down the under hood temps, resulting in better intake temps, or would down the pipe temps be too high for the cat and muffler?

I have seen several people build custom boxes for their intake which seemed to work well. I do have questions though as to how they would be in blizzard conditions.

If you are worried about airflow, the limiting factor is the head of the engine. Yes, cooler air is better but it won't make up for the fact that the 12V head does not flow well. Unfortunately, porting it is a lot more expensive than an airbox mod unless you have a lot of free time and a mill at your house.
