Autozone
I have read alot of comments about Autozone being referenced as the place to go and get your engine codes read and/or cleared. Maybe I am a little confused but the only Autozone I know of is a part store...is this the same place or and I confused?
Thanks for my silly question.....

The "Parts-Looker-Uppers" at AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts and I think Pep Boys (among others) have a low-buck code reader that can only access/clear some codes. They'll come outside to your vehicle and plug in to see what shows up.

You can ask too borrow the reader and you can walk out and check them and clear them yourself, they will not clear them for you, because people were coming in and getting codes cleared and then taking it up the street to have an inspection done , and when they would check them it would come up as codes cleared , and then mech would ask who cleared codes ? then they would tell them autozone. Then they will make you drive it 1500 miles and come back again to have it insp.

Some codes clear themselves. I believe they're called "demand codes" and will clear themselves after X number of starts/key on or whatever. The ones that cause the lights to stay on are "set codes" and require a scan tool or repair to clear them.
If your light comes and goes, you probably have a "demand code" caused by a re-occuring problem. Reading the codes when the light is on is your best bet to find the problem.

List of Demand Codes?
Is there a list of what might be a demand code vs a set code? Just wondering.....I am fairly sure that this is related to the issue I am having with my temp guage sometimes working and sometimes not. The problem is that there are times when the guage is not working and yet the check engine light is not on.........
