Anybody have any experience rebuilding classic trucks?

I've got my hands on a 1957 Chevy 6400 cab and chassis truck in pretty fair condition. It needs quite a few parts replaced but it hardly has any rust on it at all. Anyways...I am thinking of basically making it a 1957 dually pickup. I want to keep the big truck drivetrain, but shorten the frame to a longbed pickup's wheelbase, and lower it a bit, (not like a lowrider, just take away some of the big truck look), and put a flatbed on the back, then swap out the cratered chevy big block with a 5.9 cummins and add stacks out of the flatbed. Anybody think this is totally ridiculous or would it be pretty cool??

Awesome idea, I think that would be a head turner. Do it and keep us updated. Start by posting pics of it as it sits.

Does anyone know if the cabs on these things are the same cabs chevy used on their pickups also? I have a good source for parts for the pickup version and was wondering if I could use them on the truck also?

Here are a couple of pics:

The fertilizer box on the back is coming off.
It looks rough, but its really in good shape for sitting outside for the past 10 years

That Would Be Sweet, I Have Heard The Cabs Are Wider Than The Half Ton Trucks But Dont Know For Sure. I Know The Doors Will Interchange And The Hoods Are The Same But Im Not Sure About Anything Else. I Am Building A 58 And A 59, So If You Have Any Questions I'll Try To Answer Them.

Alright! I will probably need a lot of help...I found some serious rust on the headliner just above the windshield so i'm considering looking for a new cab all together...thats the only problem ive found so far though

that shouldnt be to bad to fix if you can weld. i think the roofs rust out mostly because of mice, atleast that is what happened to the 59 we are building. the entire front roof panel was full of mouse crap and a couple of dead mice

by the way, here is my dads 59' and my 58'

Here is what I think would be huge fun truck. Especially inthe winter snow up here.

Not as expensive as I thought. They also are capable of being licensed as light trucks if you keep the weight under 26,000. Many are done this way.

I say a young guy with one last summer at a streetrod event. It was well done.

Thats a nice looking truck! Yeah I can weld pretty decent so I don't think it would be too bad... there are quite a few old trucks sitting around here that would have good cab parts too.. Where is a good place to find parts for these things anyways? I've already got LMC truck parts in my list and they are the best i've found so far.

haha oh and a M35A2 has been on my list of MUST haves for years bentwings
