General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

Any Jetta Diesel owners here?

My wife has an '03 TDI 5spd. 70k gets about 45 mpg . She drives it like she stole it everyday. I can't say enough about those cars......awesome ride with lots of torque and great mileage.

been talking about one for my wife to drive during our 4 months of summer. question is how well would they take to sitting under a car cover for 8 months out of the year? I know my 12V would be absolutely hateful to start. And before I get flamed for parking it the only way to come and go from my house for 8 months of the year is 4WD and chains, I wore out 2 sets last winter on the Ram.

I would a buy a 03 TDI with over 100,000 in a heartbeat for a decent price. Seems those are getting hard to find, everyone wants to keep them.
Cant say I blame them.

i have an 1989 vw golf 1.6 n/a diesel. it has over 700 000 km on it.

i will never sell this car.

I have a 99 NB TDI with about 95K on it. Great mileage; great support through Fred's TDI website. But almost universally lousy dealers. I take mine to a independent MB dealer for things I can't do myself. A good choice if you do maintenance yourself and if you want to use biodiesel (it loves it).

We have 2 Jetta TDIs (see sig below), and they have been trouble-free except for a nagging problem with the XM radio in my wife's '06 (it periodically deprograms itself). The cars are well screwed together, no squeaks, rattles or anything.

Both my wife and daughter are leadfoots, and they get 42-45 in town and 47-50 on the freeway with the '03, and 35-37 in town and 42-43 on the freeway with the '06.

I'll reinforce what others have been saying about the service department at the VW dealer. Other than warranty work, I take them to an independent shop in town that is honest.

1. With key off, press and hold the trip reset button.

2. Turn key to on but do not start.

3. While still holding trip reset, press the clock minute button. This resets the reminder.

However, this was off the A5/MkV forum over at TDIClub.com (2005/2006+). Might work for your 01, though. If not, head over there and do a search. Took me forever to find it, but I think about 10 pages in, I found the procedure.

BTW, don't get mad like I did when you see your trip go to zero. When you flip the key back to off and back on, the trip goes back to normal. Thought that was strange.
