My wife's car is a 06 Jetta TDI with the 6spd auto trans, gets around 37 city and 46 hwy. my sister has a 06 with the 5 spd and gets the same milage.
we have had ours for 16 months now and have 31K on it with no problems. its pretty fast for only having 100hp.

I have a 2003 TDI 5spd that has 100k on it now and it has never seen the dealer. Oil and filter changes and that is it. I get 48-51mpg on the highway during the summer. Winter it seems to be about 44-46. Great little cars and it has paid for itself in savings!

what is the life expectancy of these engines and transmissions? my girlfriend is in need of a new car, and wants good fuel economy, obviously I'm pushing diesel . . . curious how bad it would be to buy a TDI north of 100k miles, any thoughts?

you can get parts for about 300-350, and installed is about 700-1000.
dieselgeek.com has all the parts you could want for your TDI.
you ever change the fuel filter? thats 20k interval

Wife drives a 06.5 Jetta TDI, 5 spd manual, pkg 1, leatherette, sun roof, 17inch wheels. She is getting in the mid 30's on MPG right now, but it is just under 5,000 miles, and hasn't had first oil change. I'm hoping it goes up after it gets broke in.
So far, the only drawback I have is the required VW 505.01 oil, which I cannot find anywhere except on the Internet, or at the dealer. I plan to let her get it changed at the dealer because she didn't want me messing with it, and that's fine with me! Also, to actually change the oil seems a little more challenging than most vehicles. You have to take off a skid plate underneath to get to the plug, and the filter is inside a canister in front of the engine.

Thats the probelm with the newer VW's and dealer specific oil, 04 and older you can run the mobil 1 5-40. Make sure you run quality oil in them, as you will have some cost to clean the intake because the EGR plugged it up. As far as changing the oil, use an oil evacuator and you never have to get under the car...
