Any engine better than the Cummins in its class?

I read the thread about the Cat 3208 engine and it got me thinking. Is there any engine that's better than the 5.9L Cummins (in the same class)? As far as fuel economy, power, and longevity goes. Or do we pretty much have the cream of the crop? Is the 5.9 better than any bigger heavy duty engines?

Why would Ford put the Cummins in it's medium duty truck as standard and not the Powerstroke? That right there speaks for itself.

Could it be a more cost effective choice?

Could be, but why when they already have the contract with International? I know they're going through a lot of bs right now with them, but they've offered the Cummins for a long time now.

I'm fairly certain a Cat C7 is actually a BETTER motor in most respects you mentioned(durability, power - torque AND horsepower, and just plain old legendary history), but it probably still doesn't beat a Cummins in two other very important aspects; cost and fuel economy. The Cummins is still the best compromise for our trucks due to the latter reasons, whereas the Cat would be THE ultimate motor overall - if anyone could afford it! :-)

It depends what size category you are talking about. As far as light duty pickups go, it is the best motor that you can get in one in my opinion. But when you get into medium duty trucks, there are some other great options out there. The 5.9 is really too small for the larger medium duty trucks. I think that a DT466 is a better engine for something like a dump truck that is regularly going to grossing 30k or more. If you look at a DT360, it is very similar to a 5.9 but it is built much heavier. I happen to feel that the cat motors are just too expensive.

There is no doubt that a 5.9 is a great engine but it is pretty small.

I don't mean just for pickups. I know they use these engines in tractors and marine applications as well. So take a tractor for example, it could be bought with a Cummins, a Cat, or some other brand engine. Which would be more heavy duty and fuel efficient? Or are they all about the same?

Go price cat parts from a cat dealer, expen$ive. Half of the time you have to buy filters from them because they don't crossover to anything else.

C7's and DT466's are NOT the competition for the Cummins 5.9. Both those engines are significantly larger and heavier than a Cummins 5.9. They are the competition for the 8.3 liter Cummins. Of course Cat and IH will tell you that the C9 and the HT570 are the competition for the 8.3.

I don't think Cat can build a good small motor. Big motor hands down cat. I used to service a fleet of GMC's with 3116 cats and when they got 100,000 they burned 2 gallons of oil a week, regular 8-10 hour day 5 days a week.
