Are all manuals created equal?
You always hear of all this debate about who has the best automatic... you have your TorqShift, your 48re, and your Allisons... but what about manual transmissions?

My next truck will be a manual transmission. So I'd like to find out some information on them. Are all stick shifts created equal?

NO! They are as different as automatic's. Every tranny has it limits. But clutchs are usually the factor for manuals.

Re:Are all manuals created equal?
Not all manual trannies are created equal, but in the HD truck market you shouldn't have a problem with any of them. I would be suprised if any of the big 3's trannies are not up to whatever task you ask of them. You just need to find a reputable clutch to transmit the power (Can you say SBC?)

Re:Are all manuals created equal?
Both GM and Ford are using the ZF-6, and Dodge uses the NVG 5600 (6 speed) and NVG 4500 (5 speed).

I believe that the ZF-6 and NVG 5600 are both used in medium duty trucks. As the other posters said, it's the clutches that are at issue.
