ford psd trans prob

I know this is a dodge diesel forum but I thought I would get some opinions on here anyways. I have a 96 1 ton ford single wheel 4wd with auto trans that I use for my landscaping business. I bought the truck from a good friend of mine about 2 years ago and he had a rebuilt trans put on it before I got it and had put aprox 3k on the trans. The truck has 150k on it total and about 18k on the trans. What happened tonite while leaving a friend of mines house is the line from the trans cooler came off and I lost 1st gear and the fluid out of the trans and drove about 2 miles to the nearest parking lot. I then realized what had happened and got a friend to take me to get trans fluid. The weather was too bad to drop the pan so I reluctantly filled it back up with fluid and fixed the line and drove it home about 8 miles. It seemed to shift harder when put into drive and has a slight shudder when shifting from 1st to second. I plan on dropping the pan tomm and putting a new filter and fluid in it. I am just trying to get some opinions to see if it may have sustained permanant damage. I drive this truck everyday and tow heavy so it has to be problem free. I just dont have the money for a trans right now and besides this one doesnt have many miles on it and truck is completly stock.

Change out the filter and fluid, and drain the torque converter. It does have a 1/4" pipe plug on it and is most likely the source of your shudder. 16 quarts of mercon/dexron will be what you will need.

Good luck,

Tim

If you end up having to replace it spend a little money for the last tranny you will need. Look for BTS or Brians Truck Shop.

Once you get the pan off you'll be able to dive into this a little more. The E4OD's are not known to take alot of abuse (though my 95 stroker's E4OD lasted for 3+ years of plowing before I had to sell the truck). I'd pull the pan, see what you can. Drain all the fluid out, refill, and go from there. Get a trans temp guage, watch your temps. Addtionally, you can replace the cooler with a 6.0's, which will definately help to keep the temps in check (BTS changes all the coolers out with 6.0 coolers when they rebuild your trans). Good luck!
