94 Ford IDI

So Im going home to the GREAT STATE here in about two weeks and my dad has a 94 ex cab 4x4 FORD IDI TURBO. He gets 9mpg with that thing and I want to turn him on to his diesel, even if it isnt the right diesel. What can I do other than exhaust and intake to make that Ford run better? I have driven it and in comparison to my 96 CTD, that Ford really needs help. I cant tell its a turbo charged truck other than the words on the fender. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I owned a 94 7.3 IDI. And I never did find much of anything that would help. The guys at Banks claimed that they could juice it up for me, but I could never afford that kind of help. Again, the people at Banks claimed that the turbo on that engine was primarily for smoke control, and only added about 7 hp. After I rebuilt the tranny (an E4- OH NO!) 3 times I finally sold it. I must say that I loved the truck (F350 dually crewcab) but was never impressed with it's power.

I hope that there are others here that can be of more help than I!

Well I read on a Ford forum much like this one, much less informative, that there is a plate on a pump that can be removed. You loosen the set screw on the back of the pump and then tighten the screw to increase fuel. You have to be carefull not to go all the way in or it will damage the pump somehow. I dont know exactly where it is or what it looks like as I am too far away from the truck an a daily basis. I dont know anyone who owns one locally either. Thanks for the info and if you come across anything else let me know. Thanks

The pump can be turned up, that is true, but it will suck fuel. It will add a bit of power though. Probably straight pipe would help, but they are loud.

Is a V-8 Diesel louder than the Cummins? I would think so but I have never heard one. I was just going to clean out his CAT and get him set up with an intake better than stock and see what happens.

The '94 IDI turbos were a bit of a orphan. Only one year for them, then the powerstrokes came out. I have not heard from anyone who thought they were a good engine. They like to leak oil also.

I put 215,000 miles on mine before I sold it, and it never leaked oil, just transmission fluid every time the tranny dumped a torque converter.

Yeah, i think you can turn them up some, and it will help a decent little bit. A boy at school has a non turboed 4 door dually 2wd with 2 4 inch(i think) turnout stacks, and it looks like it runs O.K., but it aint no cummins. 1 thing i can definatley tell you, is to leave some kind of muffler on it! That boy has his straight piped with true duals, and man is that thing loud! There aint no way i could stand to drive it like that. Ive heard that the old 7.3's caould get cavitation and stuff pretty bad, but the easiest thing i would know to tell you to do is just turn in that screw a little. It should add some power. Let us know how you come out.

Not having a turbo makes it noisier. I've heard a 7.3 run with no manifolds, it was almost Top Fuel dragster loud. A turbo smooths out and muffles the sound somewhat.

7.3 IDI

Sorry Bud I was just kid'n around. You could change injectors and get the pump turned up a little, but you will have to do some work to the turbo, more fuel means more air. also you will want to get a pyro. Timing will make a diffrence and big exhuast will help. I now one guy you runs a flow master muffler on his old idi say's it makes a big diffrence. These engines are not as strong as a 5.9 so you are limited to what you can do. even worse if it is a auto. I have worked on non turbo idi 7.3 and with some pump and injector work they seem to pull better. piers diesel has a lot of ford stuff now check them out.
