800 Mile Club With Only Stock Tank
#76
I almost joined the 900 mile club. I got 897.1 on back to back tanks. The first tank actually ran out . I had a 5 gallon can in the bed. I think I put about two gallons or so to make it the 2.5 miles to the station I was trying for. It took a tad over 36 gallons in the truck and about 2 gallons in the gas can. Second tank was not near empty but I was starting on a Monday morning and decided to fill up. It took a tad over 35 gallons total for 897 miles. It averaged 25.55 mpg. The DTE and odometer totals were in the 980 mile range during the tank with the overhead reading 28.1 mpg (now I know it reads about 3 mpg high). I WILL make the 900 club.

Hey you 2nd gen guys, don't try this!!!
The VP REALLY doesn't like running out, plus 2nd gens are a real pain to bleed!
Because of the 3rd gens common rail system and the fact that the injectors are fired electraically vs by pop up pressure like earlier trucks, its super easy to prime. Just crank it!
Also 3rd gen trucks have a extra "bulge" in the top rear portion of the tank. Its supposed to be for expansion but if you are really patient you can squeeze in an extra 4-5gallons into it by trickling it in.
Plus the CR just gets better millage than 2nd gen anyway.

BTW on my 2nd gen truck I have pushed it about 60miles past the DTE 0 point For a total of about 530 miles. Mostly highway.
On my 3rd gen I went 620 miles to the DTE 0 point, havn't refilled it yet though. City/highway mixed.
Both trucks run the Edge J/A, the '01 was on setting 1, the '03 was on setting 4.

I consistantly get into the high 700s and low 800s with my 06 when on road trips. I am planning on a trip to California sometime next year so it would be nice only having to fill up a few times along the way.

I see the guys on the TDI web site getting 1000-1200 miles on a 15 gallon fillup and think "I should be able to get atleast 800-950 with 36-38 gallons in this beast". The really sad part is that this feat is being accomplished with mostly rush hour-city/hwy driving. We're talking stop/go with main lane speeds of 40-50 mph. I will admit that when the opportunity would arise for those 5 minutes or so for greater than posted speeds, I kept the truck in the 50-55 mph range. The right lane really aint so bad. I would actually find myself sitting next to someone at a stop light who had passed me 5 minutes earlier on the hwy. Also I did not run the A/C compressor (its been kind of nice around here lately). I think my avg mph for the tank was 38-39 mph (thats based on the overhead time and miles running totals). Straight hwy 9steady state 73 mph), my truck has gotten high 19's-low 20's.
