7.3 Excursion - Power Steering failure

Power Steering all of a sudden totally failed. Spewed all the fluid out. Right now it's difficult to ascertain which component failed, as the power steering pump is right over the steering box and the entire right side of the truck is soaked in oil. It's either one of those two components or maybe even a hose. Should I put some fluid in & see if I can't determine the source of the leak? What's the best way to determine the source of the leak?

Most likely blew a hose. Yes most definitely put fluid in and have someone else start the truck and turn the wheel. If a hose blew you will find it in a hurry.

The truck was driven for 30 miles after it dumped the PS fluid - is the PS pump toast now anyway?

It is possible that the pump wiped out. I would refill the system after the repair and try it before I replaced it. If you have any whining after the air is bled out then replace the pump. Mercon ATF is the factory fill for the system. You probably know this but the p/s pump runs the hydo boost for the power brakes.

You blew the high pressure hose. The service truck I used to drive did the exact same thing. We always carried a spare hose because it was a common problem.
