The John Deere 435 tractor used a 4-53 two cylinder diesel. Pretty cool and sounded like a 2000 pound bumblebee when wound up.
Some of the Cases and Masseys used the three cylinder which really sounded cool wound up with about a six inch exhaust pipe off the manifild.

There is a local guy here that has an Oliver 990 diesel with a 3-71 in it that has about $10,000 worth of engine work done and lets just say anyone near this thing has to wear hearing protection.

Boy do I feel stupid as usual. I meant to say 2-53. I would like to have one just to play with. Would go real well with my R model.

the big detroits are in water craft. I once moved a few loads from a Marine supply in New Orleans, they had huge detroits there. Used pistons for seats at the counter. I have no idea what size they were. Amazing to look at a (same as) 238 only 12 or 15 foot high.

Don't know if I have ever hard a computer clip, they went out of regular use so long ago. But picture this... A 318 Detroit turning 2250 would sound like a v8 diesel turning 4500 rpm. The two cycle fires every piston every revolution.

Heck, you guys suck. I'm sitting here right now listening to a 3v71 wound out hooked to a deep well fuel transfer pump. I work on the Miss. river, and the 25,000bbl.(1,000,000) fuel barges we push use 12v71's hooked to 5stage deepwell pumps and I get to here those things work 3-4times a week wound out at 1800-2000rpm's and they will pump that amount of fuel in about 5-6hrs. Although a couple week ago, I did a personal best of 4hr 35min. Sorry, I dont have a DAR to record the sound though.

ok, so i guess i have heard them before. i just thought they had 'em wound up real high so, these are super charged, right? and if so are these id #'s where they get the designations for super chargers? 4-71, 6-71, and 8-71, (but not the sr71 )

Yep The 2 cycle design requires a roots blower to run or at least to start. The first number is the number of cylinders the second number is the cubic inch per cylinder. 6-71 is six cylinders at 71 cubic inches each and they supposedly produce 238 horspower. With a turbo it was 256 and of course larger injectors pump them up. A 238 will happily run at 2500 with no problems although factory set at 2250. The later larger engines are lower rpm's. Non turbo is about 19 to 1 compression and the turbo models run about 17. In the winter the non turbo starts much easier. They need some heat or eithor to start below 20 or so. I always used a hair dryer down the intake, worked great.
