I voted get another kind of diesel, too......don't give up on your search! You WILL find a CTD in your price range!.....Remember, good things come to those who wait. Settling for something else other than what you want (and know is the best!) will ALWAYS come back to haunt you......The 6.5 turbo is a less than desirable motor.....the electronic pumps have chronic failures (not unlike VP44's ) and are very exspensive to fix, they have glow plug problems, injector issues (injectors are mega $$$ for the electronic 6.5's), comparatively short life expectantcy and there is not much to bomb on them!
Don't give up!

When i was in ag
Our high school ag truck was a 1995 gmc 2500 with the 6.5 TD... P O S!! no power to tow whatsoever, and at the ripe old mileage of 25K had an IP replaced.... SOme have been good, some have not.. i wouldnt risk it at all... id rather lower my standards and get a ford idi again, or even better a 1st gen cummins... yeah thats the way to go.... Hang in there, ull have a dodge in no time...

Hey man, it's your money. Do what makes you happy, you are the only one who has to live with it. I'd say that the fact that your poll showed 2 people out of 28 thinking you should buy it will tell you something
But you know what??? Nobody taking the poll is spending the money or has to drive the thing, just you. So it's entirely your decision.
However, the price difference for a 6.5 and as compared to an older PSD, IDI or first gen Cummins is negligible at best, why settle for something you really don't want??
But again, it's ur money. Good luck on whatever you decide.

It's not uncommon for the 6.5 to blow stock head gaskets. Look for recent wrenching and a sure sign is the radiator over flow container will fill up way past the full mark after a little hard driving. If the head gaskets are blow, you are also talking about another set of heads, ($1000 for a set) to fix it right. Upgrade to 180 thermostat(s) ASAP!. 92 & 93 models use a mech injection pump, 94+ used electronic IP. Good Luck!

get the vin number then go to the local chevy or gmc dealer and have them run a warranty history, this will tell you whats been done under warrenty, these also have a 125,000 mile warranty on the inj pump so if it is less then that your in good shape, for more info go to www.thedieselpage.com/ thats the 6.2,6.5 ,d-max site, lots of good info.i have a 6.5 and 5 6.2's and actually i prefer the 6.2 myself.but good luck anyway

My girl friends dad has one and it is gutless. I have driven it some when we were working on mine, and boy was I glad to get my truck back. It started hard in the cold, smoked alot on intial start up, and sounded like the engine was coming apart when first started. I was not impressed with the truck at all and he bought it new, it only has 40K on it. These are only my opions though. I will say that if you are really looking at this truck, don't drive a dodge or ford before hand because you will be greatly dissappointed.

I have a burb with 335000 miles on it with very little problems. Had a 1500 4x4 pickup with 210000 trouble free miles that I towed the krap out of. For a daily driver you cannot beat the comfort of a Chevy. The 6.5 has enough power to run with most of the crowd as a grocery getter. I would still have the 1500 if the wife would have let me keep a fourth vehicle..........
