If you get one I would look for mechanical injection pump the PMD s on the electronics are a nightmare . also on the 6.5s with serpentine belts make darn sure the crank dampner is in good condition ,6.5TD are know to break cranks and it did happen to me a couple years back . all in all its an ok engine just real low on power and it has a heating issue when towing

Honestly, I would look around some more, and find a nice 2500 suburban with the Vortech 5.7L (yep a good old 350) engine in it. Sure it will cost you more in gasoline than the 6.5L diesel, but if I'm not mistaken, a whole new 350 V8 could be bought for around the price on one $1700 injection pump for the 6.5L diesel.

I'm a diesel fan, but frankly the reliability of those old 350's, and the fact that every mechanic in the nation has probably worked on them several times, makes it a much more attractive option. I would avoid the 454's, personally. Plus, a 350-engined Sub would be a LOT easier to resell down the road.

Sounds like the other side has a blown head gasket. Usuauly when the head gasket goes, the heads are also cracked. Just a new gasket won't work. I would also spend the $60 for new head bolts, cheap insurance.

Yeah i wasnt sure. I replaced the pass. side when a head bolt broke on it in dec 05. The mid march 06 it started leaking oil bad 1gal. in 140 odd miles. Most it was leaking on the drivers side exhaust and the smoking back in the cab but i havent had time to take everything off to get to it and look at it.

I had one & loved it. Got rid of it at 275K miles. Went thru two injection pumps, but one was covered by warranty. Other than that, replaced the alternator & batteries. Could tow up to 8,000 lbs. OK, but not like a Cummins or PowerStroke. Milage was good too.
