General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

you are truly on to something there. I am in the middle of a 79 Ramcharger that I am putting a 4bt in. I am hoping to get around 25 mpg. It would be way too easy to head to a dealer and get a Ram 1500 and get the same numbers...

I'm getting 26 out of a 4BT in a 79 3/4 ton GMC 4X4, so your goal should be closer to 30 MPG.

Make it a stickshift......

You must be talking about Chrysler and NOT Cummins.

I've been a little out of the loop with my friends over in the Light Duty Diesel division are doing. I would be very surprised if this was a 5.0L engine, because up till now it's been closer to 6L (5.6, if I remember).

As I type this, there is an aluminum v-8 engine sitting in plain sight at work. It's VERY trick. I don't remember if it's all aluminum or aluminum head on iron block (I suspect the latter).

The Vee configuration has a lot going for it in a vehicle where packaging matters a ton (anything other than a commercial vehicle).

Personally, a Durango/Aspen type pf vehicle with this new diesel is about a dream vehicle to me.

Anyway, this engine is far more than rumor. It's been nearly ready for production of a long time. Problem was that Chrysler balked at buying it when they went nearly (or was it totally?) bankrupt. So now Cummins has a great engine looking for a customer (someone who wants to put it in a vehicle).

It should make an easy 300hp, but I'm not sure what they rate it at.

I've seen plenty of them at work-- including some with the transmission bolted to it

Justin, you are correct, it´s a 5.6 l V8. And I think it might be a tad over 300 hp. The 4.2 V6 should put out at least 250 hp and should be the engine for the 1500 and 2500 series. 4bt people are seeing 27+ mpg after conversion and without emission crap on it. I guess with the 4.2 V6 in a 1500 25 mpg should be easy. It´s just time for Dodge (I meant RAM) to wake up and get these engines out to play...

I read about these motors several years ago, they were 5.6L 4.2L, the 6 is a cut-off 8, like the B series. They were designed to meet 2010 emissions from the start, and in some '01 test mules, they were beating the 360s and Hemis.

I just wish I could remember what magazine it was, could have been one of the MOPAR mags.

Hi guys, I'm from over at the 2500-3500 diesel side. I was just at the Ford Rouge Plant and I asked a gentleman about that very thing. I'll try and quote it as best as possible, "The Rouge does have the capability to do that at this time. I personally have not heard that there will be a diesel in the 150, but we do have meetings frequently and we are told specifically what we cannot discuss....But thank you for your intrest......"

WHOA HOHN....I've been off this site too long.

Working for Cummins now?? That's Awesome...

1/2 ton diesels need to get here fast...I'd love to get my Dad into one of them, he mostly just drives anymore, not much heavy towing or the like...just 50-60K miles of driving a year.

Yeah, it's way overdue IMO. I love my 2003 3500, but since it's mostly just a daily driver / family truck, it's overkill for my needs. Not that I don't generally go the overkill route anyway.

Daily driving change of style is what bumped me out of the HD market a few years ago. While trucking along with a CRD Libby, I was waiting for a light-duty diesel to come out. Didn't happen, so I kept the Libby light towing, and now commute in the 335d with a rather sweet 3.0L in-line 6 that sounds like a muffled Cummins (until it hits 4000-5000 rpm) and pushes 40+mpg while still doing 0-60 in 5.8.

I find the V-8 configuration a bit odd, there are several well-packaged 6's out there that would be fantastic for a 1500 or Durango!

The Liberty CRD! That's one vehicle I totally forgot about. Sounds like a sweet daily driver. What years have the best fuel economy?

They only were made in 2005 and 2006 -- Jeep was testing the waters. Although nothing like the GM 5.7 fiasco, the terrific VM Motori 2.8L in-line 4 was mated to a 545RFE and the torque convertor quality (plastic stator) and shift programming wasn't particularly well done. Both years don't get the rated city mileage due to the loose TC and delayed TC lock-up, but on the highway, I'll get 29-31mpg at around 70.

Copied from US News & World Report Later in the model year (2010)

, Dodge is slated to add a diesel and hybrid model. If you need a truck but are concerned about fuel economy, it may be worth waiting for them. Right now, only the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado have hybrid models available; cross-shopping them with the eventual hybrid or diesel Ram makes good sense.
