I really like the idea of a V8 Diesel in a Power Wagon. The shorter engine would do away with the problems associated with the winch mounting, and the lighter weight would be better for off road use.

Well, the EPA ruined the CRD in the Liberty. The same engine in Europe get somewhere around double the mileage as the ones the EPA intentionally sabotage. Full size BMW 4 door sedans get 50MPG in real world driving.

Dodge are already making small diesels.
The air in in America is cleaner than Europe because V8 gas guzzlers spewing out "clean" Carbon Monoxide is not a problem.
Hmm, Detroit and big oil will not allow diesels here because of $$$.
Europe had tier 5 motors in semis doing 15mpg, America has not, as the trucking industry is sucking up so much oil and you and I are paying for it every time we buy something that has to be transported.

I'm pretty sure it's the EPA's nightmare clean diesel initiative causing the problems for diesels, not Detroit. I'm pretty sure more complex engines that cause higher warranty costs isn't their idea. I'm pretty sure big oil doesn't have a lot of pull either. Clean dIesel has lowered big oils profit margins on the new formulations of diesel and gas. They have been able to sell more diesel because of the poor aftertreatment technologies.

Update: I have made contact with an EPA official and am in the process of trying to "educate" them on our concerns. I forwarded the article about the test between the full size diesel BMW sedans against a Prius in a several thousand mile loop. The Bimmer got 50MPG and the the Prius only got 48.
I explained the anxt we have about how diesel cars are ubiquious in Europe (where the emmissions laws are very strict) and can get upwards of 70 or move MPG's, but IF and WHEN we ever get diesel versions of our favoirte vehicles, the mileage is only barely better than the the gasser counterpart.
Needless to say I expect an audit from the IRS.....

The V configuration is just dumb in my opinion. There's so much more to like about an inline configuration. I'd love to see an updated version of the 4bt but it's a low rpm, long stroke engine, which I think most of us here are interested in. Unfortunately, that's also exactly what Detroit thinks the vast majority of the public DOESN'T want. Detroit seems to be all about high-revving (ie, short stroke) diesels because it's easier to pump up the HP rating without really doing anything to increase torque output.

Educate the people, long stroke is good for low end power. If you want a high-rev engine then get a Honda S2000. Btw those I6 BMW diesel engines (f.e. 335d) rev up to 5000 rpm!
But back to the original topic. Are there any news about the 5.0 V8 diesel? It would be a great engine for 1500 and 2500 Ram´s. Maybe offer a smaller V6 for the 1500 as well. The V8 already produces more than 300 hp if I remember correctly.

a v8 cummins in a 1500 would be fine, as long as its built correctly, Sure our i6 is great for torque but the crowd they are catering too isnt heavy haul its ma and pa boat towers.
As long as they dont adapt it to the 2500 and higher and loose the i6 im happy, and maybe own one of each

Beware of the constant mileage comparisons to the Prius. They usually are rather deceitful. The Prius was NOT designed for high fuel efficiency at highway speed, it was designed for high fuel efficiency during around town (stop and go) driving, at which it is unbeatable. The Atkinson cycle engine (variable stroke) coupled to a remarkable dual input planetary makes it an incredible machine for it's intended purpose. Can't compete? Slander!
