I think he means the rest of the truck is worn out on 12v's since they are 10+ years old now. It's generally hard to find a 12v that was treated gently and/or for recreational use. Most trucks that age, even if it's in good condition, you'll have to dump at least another $1-5k + time into it to bring it up to date on maintenance (especially 4x4).

I don't know how long you want to wait, But I would look for a 97 98 12v. I have driven the 3rd gens. there alright but for the simplity and the parts and mods are cheaper I wouldn't trade mine for nothin. I know I will end up with a 3rd gen but it won;t be because I want to get rid of my 12v I will always have that

12v the way to go

I agree with 12 flapper,,the old 12v's are very reliable and cheep to mod but with a 3rd there is no contest as far as interior room, design, and ride + you can get to higher HP levels much quicker with a common rail. I have an 03 HO with 187,000 and I have replaced normal wear stuff but what do you expect? I went from a 1st gen to a 3rd I LOVE mine! You are going to hear a million diffrent opinions, find one you like and go for it!

I work for a car shop making $8.00 an hour and around 50 hours a week.

I don't mean to discourage you here son but to be honest I don't think you can afford this venture.

I'm sure youd be driving much fewer miles but still, I can tell you that my vehicle expenses, (payment, fuel, insurance and maintenance) are MUCH more than you earn in a month, let alone take home after taxes and a put a whack of cash down when I bought mine always.

You might be able to get a first gen and fiddle around but I honestly think you are better off with a more economical vehicle.

Find yourself a nice K-Kar.

Even if you could afford to run it, good luck when you have to Fix it.

If you want to do, then do it! It's your life, your decision, and your money! Too many people now days sticking there noses where they don't belong! I give you credit for working hard and having a goal. Too many kids out there now days that get everything given to them by mommy and daddy! It makes me sick to see it! The kids never learn the value of a dollar. So, have at it, get what you want and can afford and have fun!
