2006 Quad Cab w/ Mercedes

Yes, the sprinter has a horrible 5 cylinder Mercedes diesel. All kinds of electrical problems along with numerous other issues. We do a little work for FedEx and the last time I spoke with the regional maintenance supervisor (Maybe May of 2004) he told me that FedEx had actually just cancelled and order for some 280, 000 Sprinters because of the problems that were experienced in the test units. They're going to stick with the W700's and W300's and continue using the Cummins.

OK guys, you can give me all the grief you want about being the "newbie" but FYI my first CTD was in '91. That Dodge 250 lumber wagon was a work horse but the ride..... Since then three more Dodge CTD's in 94, 97 and this 03 I have now.
Regarding the Mercedes deisel, I did a little checking around. I live in gold mining country where diesel pickups outnumber cars on the road and the really BIG diesels work in the mine. Our local community college has a nationally recognized diesel technology program. I was talking to the head of that program and he took me to the shop to show me the Mercedes diesel, the Cummins diesel and the Cat they had for instructional purposes. I got the full tour complete with service diagnosing and the whole shmeer. Now, granted, these are the big dogs that run the 400 ton haul trucks but the Mercedes is a hell of an engine. I asked him when Mercedes was going to come out in a Dodge and he told me that it would be "soon". He told me that he was going to wait a year or two for when it did come out and then trade off his CTD that he has now. To me, it seems to be a no brainer. Already Dodge and Diamler Benz have jumped into bed together on the 300C. It is only a matter of time. (Boy, am I gonna be blasted for this post!)

Unless Mercedes steps up to the plate and gets some parts distributors here in the States there will be no hope for them. I have a customer who has 10 hours on a brand new 12 cylinder Mercedes and both of the turbos went out, electrical systems went haywire, and the fan came off and went into the radiator. Now, because Mercedes is such a diesel leader they have been waiting for parts from Germany for over 3 weeks. I'm sorry, but I'm going to follow the Cummins wherever it goes.

The only thing more ignorant than a teenage girl is a new car salesman. I took my Road Runner to Chrysler dealer to look at the new 300C one day. The mechanics knew what it was and I had long talk about the motor I was running. The one salesman who came over said, "Nice Charger."

The megacab ain't nothing new. I had a '66 D200 crew cab, short bed, step side, powered by a 6-354 NA Perkins coupled to a granny low 4 speed and 4.11 gears. I bought it surplus out of DRMO. Dodge built a number of them for the Air Force. Top speed was 72 mph empty, loaded, uphill, or dowhill. What a pig. Sure wish I had it back. There was less than a thousand of them built.
