1962 mercedes benz 190D
yeah so I found this little project car I am thinking about picking up for CHEAP..
I don't know much about theses older MB diesel's so I am hoping someone on here may have some info...
from what I can tell it is a 1962 MB 190D....but when I search that year car it only brings up 190DC??? is this a good year MB diesel??? I am sure it is gutless but maybe that can be tweaked a little????
yeah it does need some restore work...BUT it runs and drives(it has a bad clutch slave cyl)
what do you MB guys think???
any help or info or advice would be much appreciated!!!
I posted on a Benz forum in the Diesel section but NOBODY responded
It does need some work....but I think it could be a really cool fun project...maybe put a cummins 4bt in it later on!?!?!?!?

Those were built like tanks. All the best engineering from the era. Because they were rather homely they have never been very popular with MB people. Many of the sedans used the same frame structure so parts from other series may exchange, ie suspension parts, drivelines etc.
My 71 250C actually used the same wheelbase and frame mounts as the SL's of the same era. I adapted some parts from the SL's to sweeten it up a little. Tach in the clock location..from an SL, floor mounted shifter from a 280E.
Check the bottoms of the doors and the 'tops' of the headlights for rust.
What's the mileage? A lot of old diesels were driven by people who didn't really know much about them. We had one come in once and the old guy said he was getting rid of it before more problems started, chief complaint...it smoked, the rings were probably shot!. It was a pristine 76 240D with about 70K miles. Wish a dumb college kid (read "ME") would've seen it for what it was and bought it.
A set of newer mag type MB wheels and some TLC would bring that old 190 around.

YES grab it fast, it's worth a lot !!!!
Sadly, car is 1 year younger than me
They were pretty straight forward built, very simple engines, pumps, etc.
Yes it was a dog, and remember it is not a newer direct injection motor, this was the old style diesel, glow plug to start and a lot of warm up idling before driving it.

Wow, my sister's in-laws had nealry the same car for many years. Sadly, it was parked in a garage with a DIRT floor, that was MUD much of the years while it was stored. So the entire undercarriage was rusted through. It would be great if you could get it running, i'd love to see an original one of those survive.

DTR's 'Go to Guy'
I just flipped a 75 MB 240D and made around $900 bucks on the deal! Diesels are going NUTZ on ebay right now. Buy as many as you can get your hands on. Get them running, and advertise them as WVO SVO WMO potentials! People are eating them up! JMO

Those cars gradually evolved into the 240D after the 190D, the 200D and the 220D. My dad had a 200D that looked just like it with a four speed manual tranny that had the column shifter. I can remember him waiting for the glow plugs in the morning. They are very well made solid cars with excellent suspension, but they are gutless. Our 200D would go about 75 MPH if you waited long enough on level ground. At speed it sounds like a sewing machine running under the hood. At signals they are very "leisurely". When the 240D came out it was thought to have a lot more power than the old 190D. Yours must be nearly the last year for the 190D because the ones I remember seeing had the older body style.
My girlfriend had a 240D for a while and I had a new Mercedes rebuilt engine put in. I thought it would outlast all of us but her son slid it into a curb and bent the rear suspension. Now it just sits with only 10,000 miles on the engine and clutch.
PS. I see someone already "liberated" the Mercedes emblem from the fake radiator cap. A common problem.
