I love my 97 much quieter and easier to work on. No computer for the engine in the 12V ones. Very Bomb friendly. The 97 sounds perfect and low miles per year. I have 105K on mine.

Don't sell the 24v short they are good engines and have good power output also...the 12v is a little ezer to work on being a mechanical motor you don't have a computer controlling the power....overall both engines have pluses and minuses

Re:12v or 24valve opinions
I've had two 12V's and one 24V. I can't say a bad thing about either one at all. The 12V is totally mechanical and would run without any external power provided you could get the fuel shut off solenoid open. The 24V is totally dependent on electrical power to keep the computers / modules running and has an electric lift pump that is notorious for going bad. The 12V has a mechanical lift pump somewhat similar to the old gassers. Put 142000 miles on on 12V and the only problem I had was the rear crank shaft oil seal started leaking (already had over 100000 miles on it). Got it replaced and no more problems. I've seen both of the engines on a dyno and the HP that some are getting is totally amazing to me.
Bottom line is you can't really go wrong with either one as long as you get a history on the one you are getting. Find out how it was treated, how it was maintained, and stuff like that. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any real advantage one has over the other especially when it comes to reliability. I've heard that the 24V's are more expensive to BOMB but I can't validate that. I have an EZ on mine and plan to go with bigger injectors but that is all I want.
Check the truck out, drive it, and don't worry if it is 12 or 24, both are great.
Good luck.

Re:12v or 24valve opinions
I think both are good choices. The only thing that would concern me about the 24v is the lift pump. They are still having problems with the updated ones. If the lift pump is not working right it will strave the injection pump. This may cause the injection pump not to last as long, or could kill the pump alltoghther. I know people who carry a lift pump with them at all times just incase fuel pressure drops. Some people put a pusher pump on.

Paul

I love the 24 v. Of course the 12v is cheaper to bomb it seems. I dont worry about the lift pump. If it goes bad I will replace and keep the hammer down. Just look the trucks over and decide which YOU like.

Re:12v or 24valve opinions
Have a 12valve work truck with 150,000 Km/h on it no probs to date, Have had 1 96 was a lemmon, 97 descent truck, 1 98 good truck, 2 99's one 2000 and an 02 now all with no probs what so ever. As for choice I like the 24v cause of the updates and the ease of bombing and also the added Hp from factory way nicer driving truck an 02 with 4 disks is sweet too!

If given a choice, a 12Valve for me. I had a 96 that my son has now, 208,000 on it. One fuel pump, one relay for the on/off switch on the injection pump, one tranny (auto), two
lower ball joints and an idler arm. Engine and fuel injection pump are fine. Truck will run from New Orleans to Tampa Fl without a fuel stop.

My 2000 is doing ok at 91,000. Still have the original lift pump. The most costly things so far are not engine related.
The 24V is doing real good. Its still all stock. But, its only a mater of time before the rotary fuel injection pump takes a dump.

Have been through a complete A/C system including the evaporator and one set of front brakes.

Dave
