If they would have used the 4bt in the 1/2 tons, when they started using the 5.9L in the big trucks, we would have a 4.5L 16v 4cyl Cummins. Too bad it would have all the emission crap on it, but it would be an awsome little truck. Maybe even a sweet Dakota Diesel! Alas, not in a million years would the car companies make something that sweet, and sell it in the US!!!!!!!

I know a guy living working in thailand in the oilfield. He just bought a Chevy Colorado with a 3.0L 4 banger Duramax. he dsaid he paid $24k for it all in. fullload.
His quote on it

2007 Chevy Colorado Crew Cab Z71 3.0 L 4 cylinder turbo diesel duramax. Fully loaded, leather, auto. I just got the ECM reprogramed and high flow exhaust. It moves pretty good.
The best part is the price. $24,000 with the toneau cover and 20's from the dealership. Too bad we can't get that price at home.

I have a smaller tractor that has the 4.5L 16 valve Common Rail Intercooled Cummins. It is quiet, fuel efficent, powerfull, and reliable. Would have been the perfect engine for the 1/2 ton

The reason we cannot buy cool stuff like that is the the Big 3 are STILL OUT OF TOUCH WITH WHAT WE WANT!!! Instead, GM offers 13 different cars and suv's under their umbrella and are completing against THEMSELVES!!!
Man, those guys REALLY TICK ME OFF!!! The Chrysler CEO has said the reason they are in trouble is that they build "too good of a car". Really? Has anyone driven a k-car, a la baron, a 2000 neon (3 motors in 45,000 miles ask me how I know) a Focus, a cobalt or any of the current crock o crap of cars that they put out??
There is a reason a Nissan sentra is sitting in my driveway...
Man, I'm going to give myself a heart attack yet... Nothing like my tax dollars bailing out crappy car companies and then they take out full page ads thanking us... the least they could do is call me in the morning...

I was just reading diesel power and came across the 1/2 ton diesel report. Dodge is going with a 5.0 90-degree V8 cummins, rated at 320hp and 500lb-Ft with a cummins built variable geometry turbo located in the engine valley. It will also be a common rail with piezo injectors. Would anyone get one? Where do you think you could take this engine hp wise? Will this compete with the 12v, 24v, 5.9 CR, 6.7 Cr? I would have gone with the cummins 4BT for a 1/2 ton. It is a proven system and sticks to the inline torque producing configuration that cummins followers love. Any thoughts or opinions?
The 4BT boarders on too heavy for a 1/2 ton chasis and very likely cannot be made to pass the ridiculous modern emissions standards.
I'd gladly give up big HP for decent torque and 4BT-like reliability. But what do I know?

They already have that. The 5.7 HEMI is no joke, but like others here if I wanted a "fast revving, lots of power" truck I'd buy a HEMI. The fact is that no one (very few of us) would buy a 30+MPG 1/2 diesel. The market wants diesels that feel like gas powered vehicles.

They don't. And the reason they don't is that before 1989 the best diesel engine in the passenger vehicle market was the 6.9L NA Ford Diesel.

BTW, my 79 K2500 with a stock 105 Hp. 4BT is just as fast as it was with the old 350 Gasser, and gets 26 MPG Vs. the 16 the 350 got. In the spring the rusty old girl will be going to the boneyard and the 4BT will be heading to a 95 GMC K3500, I expect even higher MPGs with the 4500's extra gear.

it's not bad. Right now I have gone 487.8 miles in town in stop and go driving and driving with a lead foot and I have a short box so that means I have a gallon or two less then most with the long box and my fuel gauge is between 1/8 and the red empty line. This mileage is not calculated for my larger tires either ( 285/75/r16). When driving nice or on hwy it gets a lot better
