Just think, a 100,000 acre algae farm can produce up to 1.6 billion gallons per year.

Saw this stuff on discovery or something a while ago... Seemed pretty cool! Of course if I remember correctly it was all privately funded because the gov wouldn't subsidize any of the research...

One more reason why we will probably never see this develop in our lifetime. I wish I had a zillion billion dollars cause you would see this stuff on the market next week.

Universities have been doing research on algae for biofuel production for a few years.

I have been following this info for a while also. The biggest issue is extracting the lipid oils out of the cells. The most commonly used process involves hexane, but hopefully they can come up with better methods which will make this an even better alternative.

The other issue is gelling issues. What is the cloud point of these oils?

I also heard that one of the planned fuel sources for the algae will be C02 from power plant smoke stacks... so not only does it fill up your truck but it scrubs power plants too!
