synthetic fuel???? Why not??

I have a question that has been eating me up for a while. If there has been synthetic oil around since WWII, why is there not synthetic fuel out there. Would it not burn good, or maybe it would be to expensive? Any ideas?

Has the price of synthetic been going up with the price of dino. If not I wonder how long it would take for them to equal out.

Germany used synthetic fuels late in WWII when oil was scarce. I believe it was synthesized from natural gas.

Its mostly a cost thing

The Germans made their diesel out of coal in WWII.

My governor is pushing for a plant to turn coal into diesel in eastern Montana. Supposedly there are enough reserves there to provide diesel for the entire country for at least 100 years. Cost is about $35 a barrel but it will take a six billion dollar investment to build the plant.
Here's an article on it http://www.billingsgazette.com/newde...-coal-fuel.inc

That will seriously cut into the 150 year estimate of coal available in Wyoming.

South Africa has been processing coal into fuel oil for years using the GTL process.
With the massive coal tailing in PA and in the western US it's about time to use this process to make fuel.

England is producing some synthetic fuel. It is made from natural gas. Not up on all the info, but I do recall reading something about it awhile ago, so it is out there. KD

I once saw a video of someone who soaked 20 lbs of charcoal in liquid oxygen to see if "it would light faster..."

They put rag on the end of a pole and lit it. It lit fast...vaporized the grille but had a nice pile of coals sitting on the ground. Only took 3 seconds and an 80 dollar grille to have an instantaneous pile of coals.

Rumor has it the fireball went 200' into the air.

In PA there is a senator that is pushing to build a plant to make waste coal into fuel. I guess the coal that isn't good enough to sell. Also they are supose to build Ethanol plant just north of harrisburg. You should see all the homeowners prostesting it with signs on there front lawns. I don't understand the protesting

It's the NIMBY (not in my back yard) crowd.
They gripe about high energy prices but don't any new plants in close proximity.
