Burnt Smell

The engine has a burnt oil smell. What can cause that? I can't find any leaks. The truck does not have a cat.

Diesel engine oils contain a wax like additive designed to hold other additives in suspension while in storage. First time your engine warms up after changing the oil this additive begins to burn off and may take upwards to 500 miles to finally burn away. Smells exactly like you spilled oil on the exhaust manifold. Some oils are worse than others for the smell with Rotella by far being the worst.

Yes, there is a breather that vents to the atmosphere, commonly known as the blowby tube.

I used it in my first gen, and can't remember it being worse than Rotella. Keep in mind, this was almost 10 years ago, and before they changed to API-CI.

I like the smell of Rotella in the morning. It smells like...victory.
